Dar was wanting to do the self-cleaning function of the oven today while I'm home, so I've googled up the information on the hows (in case there's something I'm not aware of in doing it). Well, turns out that what I wasn't aware of is that lots of folks on the innerwebs are saying not to (or rarely to) use the function -- that it gets too hot and ruins the oven.
Do you guys use the self-cleaning function of your ovens?

I have in the past, but it's not an every-year kind of thing.

I was making a meatloaf one night and I stuck it in the oven. I accidentally hit the self cleaning function. By the time I realized it, the oven was on the way up to surface of the sun temperature. I hit the shutdown, but the door was locked and could not be opened for about 20 minutes—until it reached a temperature that wasn’t lethal to humans. I was worried the meatloaf was going to burst into flames. It didn’t. Barb says I was panicking but I viewed it as being very concerned. When the door unlocked, I pulled the meatloaf out. It looked beautiful. I let it cool a moment and then sliced it. It was absolutely perfect. It was moist and flavorful. We had it for dinner and it was the best meatloaf I ever made. I always said I would use that method again, but Barb won’t let me. She said something about a fire hazard or stupid luck the first time. Who knows?
Anyway, we use the function once every couple of years. Be sure to take the racks out or they will discolor. You might combine cleaning with a nice meatloaf dinner.

I think our recently purchased oven has some self-cleaning function that doesn't involve excessive heat. I need to review the owner's manual again.

We’ve only ever done it a few times. High heat, and generally accompanied by toxic cleaners.

I prefer the patina of burned carbon.

We’ve done that but maybe not with our new stove, oven. Fiddlerina is very picky about the new appliance and cleans the oven by hand if needed.

My favorite punk band. Talk about loud and irritable personalities! Nasty bunch of women. I think they got a Grammy for their album, Despicable.

I had a friend who was trying to sell her house. Naturally, she did a thorough job of cleaning the place. Put the oven on self-clean. After wards, it stayed locked and she couldn't get it open. She had to call a service person to get it unlocked. We keep a sheet of aluminum foil in the bottom of our ovens. If something spills, it's an easy clean-up. I don't believe we've ever cleaned our 2 ovens in this house in the 4 years that we've been here.

But I've learned not to argue. Did I mention the part about being married for 47 years?

I've never used that function. I figure an oven is an autoclave every time it's turned on, so no need to push the self-cleaning option.

Clean an oven?
That seems like an oxymoron.

Sue is a neatness freak. She periodically uses the cleaning function on the electric oven. I'm guessing ever 3 months or so.
