I have an older big plasma TV purchased in like 2006 or so. I think it's a Panasonic and is high 50's or 60" screen. At the time it was spendy and "top shelf". Been probably the best TV I've ever owned and the picture quality is still excellent to me and the TV works great. Much mellower picture than the current super hyped LCD flat screens. It sits front and center in the living room and pretty much occupies a wall.
I've been thinking about the day it finally craps out and what would I do. I still pay DISH monthly but my TV watching is waaaaayyyy down these days. Like maybe a DVR'd movie a week, CBS Sunday Morning a few times a month, Superbowl and few NFL play off games, election night coverage or the occasional breaking story.
When the TV croaks I'm not 100% sure I'll replace it. Anybody else TV free?

Well of course you don’t need a TV. You have horses.

I don't know what I'd do without TV to tell me the weather. I might have to look out the window.

I’ve lived without a TV for over 17 years. So far so good.

I don't see any reason to do without a TV as long as there are some things you enjoy watching. What point would you be proving?
We just get basic cable. Right now we watch Doc Martin and Washington Week every week. Otherwise, the TV is on only when there's something special on or when I want some passive, mindless entertainment. At such times I'm glad it's there.

I watch a lot of TV. Mostly YouTube, streaming stuff like Netflix and Amazon Prime, and sports. Occasionally I watch news programs. I would feel disconnected from the world if I could not tune in to some local or national news for emergency events, e.g. local storms and emergencies and crazy unexpected events like 9/11.
And sometimes I just want to take a brain break and tune into a cop/mystery show like "NCIS" or a comedy series, like "Big Bang."

"...crazy unexpected events like 9/11."
And January 6th. I turned on the tube for that.

At such times I'm glad it's there. I'm not trying to prove any point at all. Anything that's ever been on TV seems to be available over the Net. It's just that with a TV set in an often-used room, it's tempting, when you walk through and find it on, to sit down and watch whatever is on the screen. I've done that even when I've seen what's being broadcast one or more times before. It just draws one in. I have too many other interests to waste time watching meaningless programming.

Dub, if it matters, I wasn't commenting on your post. I was answering Steve's. I didn't make that clear.

TV, Alexa, computer, radio, podcasts on phones, we all do one or the other. If someone doesn't watch TV, they probably engage in some other form of mass media. I don't even know what a TV is anymore. It could be several things. For example, it can be a large screen for your computer.
I'm an Alexa fan myself, which I use as a radio that I can manipulate with my voice instead of turning a dial. So I tell people I'm a radio listener.

I don't think that there is current network series that we watch. Some sports. Most of our watching is British shows on Acorn and Britbox, with a few Netflix or Amazon shows.

Steve,
I have thought about buying a horse. Always loved to ride, but my family hasn't owned any for 45 years.
What do you project the annual cost is for two horses with hay, grain, teeth floating, shoeing, and other associated vet and maintenance bills?
(I suspect that you just rent your ponies out to "Yellowstone" and get it all for free.)

There are so many fresh, creative, well-written shows on TV, "Young Sheldon" springs to mind, how could anyone live without at least three TVs, one in the living room, one in the kitchen, one in the bedroom, and one in the bathroom... wait, that's four. How could anyone live without at least four TVs?

Where exactly did you think the term “Shit Ton” originated? In my case I have two so Shit Ton Squared.

I just last night finished a binge of all five series of the phenomenal, Spanish crime drama, Money Heist. A fantastic, passionate, tense and gripping ride. It's on Netflix and just excellent. Highly recommended for fans of sexy crime capers revved up to the max with plot twists galore.
I have gotten by fine with no TV in the past. I'm kind of more of a radio person, but once in a while something delights and thrills me so much on the telly that it would be odd to deny myself such pleasure in the future. Money Heist just hit the spot.

I watch a lot of TV. Netflix and prime. Sports. But when Dars not home the TV stays off. I prefer music, reading, and guitar.

I watch an embarrassingly large amount of TV programs because I tend to practice with the TV on. Pretty much since the pandemic lockdown it seems. The only thing I don’t do is watch anything live. It is virtually all prerecorded. Even to the degree of using the Dish 20 min record buffer. I’ll turn on a show, hit the pause button and come back a 1/2 hour later so I can zip through any commercials. I keep my guitars on a stand next to the chair and use that time to practice. I stare at the TV between songs.
And sadly the time between songs is getting longer and longer.
