That's great. Just realized what a great jam song that is. I'll have to bring that one up this week.

So it's not anything against Carlos, but he was not the most interesting part of the video. I would have liked to have seen a few other guitarists in the mix, especially from other countries (going with the theme). Or see Tal Wilkenfeld take a solo (check out some of her work with Jeff Beck from a decade back). But I did love all of those percussionists, and the vocalists too. And the organ (did I leave anyone out?).

So, in these sorts of projects, do they all really play at the same time, and how do the distant signals get back to the mother ship?
It was kind of odd to hear Carlos play w/o sustain. Oh, and holy cow, does Cindy smash the crap out of her drum skins!

Oh, and holy cow, does Cindy smash the crap out of her drum skins! I think it’s something like this. Each musician is sent a click track with chord changes and a concept recording. Each musician works up a, possibly pre-arranged, part and records it while listening to the click and chords track and sends it to the producer. The producer does the mixing then Carlos and Cindy play over the whole thing and the producer remixes the whole thing again. Many times the drummer is just there to fill out the sound. It’s really great to hear an inspired percussionist.

It’s really great to hear an inspired percussionist. well number one, Cindy Blackman (Santana) is an excellent drummer as well as a percussionist. Sometimes "drumming" is used as a perjorative in an orchestral context, but I think anyone who's ever heard a cookin' band with a good drummer knows that "drumming" is a specialty within percussion that takes a lot to do well, and when it's done poorly it's noticable. Number two, this song has a lot of great percussion. I think the original band had at least two percussionists, maybe more? Technology can be a wonderful think when people figure out how to use it in interesting ways.

The Playing for Change foundation has made a number of videos over the years using this technique. You can check them all out on youtube. This one was the very first they made,

I would imagine that a track is sent around to different players who listen to the track while recording his or her own part. That person then sends his or her track to Carlos and his engineers. Another way of saying Dub is right. (Damn, is he always right?).
I have a PRS "SE" hollow body, an overseas version of the American made model, and it is an extremely high quality guitar in appearance, construction, and sound. My impression is that Paul Reed Smith is attempting, and achieving, a higher quality of production of electric guitars than Gibson and Fender, whether it is US or foreign construction.
