Of course I've heard of Etown and Nick Forster. I'm a huge Hot Rize fan from the beginning (even got to see them in a church concert the last year Charles Sawtelle was healthy enough to tour with them). But I'd never heard of John Darnielle or the Mountain Goats. I listened to a little of a Tiny Desk concert and realized why I'd never heard of him/them, and probably still wouldn't listen past a few seconds of any song. Nevertheless, Darnielle's name came up on a theology podcast I listen to regularly, so I did some digging and came across this interview.
I find the whole interview fascinating on so many levels and I thought some of you might as well. The conversational style makes me uncomfortable (and one thing that's painfully obvious is the degree to which Darnielle is a prisoner to what he knows he is and is not culturally allowed to say and how he has to dance around it all). Still, there's so much history, music, writing, and being in this interview, I was riveted throughout (whenever a conversation/interview makes me wish I could join in -- question, add, observe -- I am riveted).
