Just heard on the radio that Toby Keith passed away. Only 62. Sigh.....
I always liked him and really enjoyed his music. My favorite being "Beer for My Horses" a duet he did with Willie Nelson. Had lots of fun with family and friends at his restaurant/bar in Las Vegas. The bottle opener I use to this day is one I purchased at the Toby Keith gift shop. It is a red/white/blue guitar shaped opener.
Heading to the horse therapy ranch this morning. I have a feeling "Beer for My Horses" will be playing in my head. Planning on spending the afternoon in my art studio. I will have Toby Keith playing all afternoon. Might even bring out my Red Solo cup and enjoy an adult beverage while I am working.

I always kind of liked his no apologies approach. You knew exactly what he was about.
He recently played a concert somewhere and the gist of the reporting was "he's coming back" after a battle with stomach cancer. He looked to be a shell of his old self physically and clearly didn't look well. RIP.

Heard him for the first time this morning, Red Dixie Solo Cup, fun song. I just edited a look-back profile by one of the Strib's music writers. Sounds like Toby was a straight-shooter and a shrewd businessman, as well. His politics were right in the middle -- he called himself "a conservative Democrat" and described the left/right divide as being like a gas range. If you turn the knob all the way to the right, everything will get overcooked and ruined, all the way to the left and nothing gets done.

My condolences to his family and friends. I also don't believe I have ever heard one of his songs.
I noted in the NYT article about his passing that there had been some conciliation between Toby Keith and Natalie Maines/Dixie Chicks, and even talk of performing together.

Colbert last night had a nice segment about how he met and became friends with Toby Keith. Touching.

I found out he was just shy of 4 months younger than me. This is a great song, and the performance of it was about 3 or 4 months ago. youtu.be/pFfQDqY6mC4?si=LvzgfEKNJ1Il4BQdDon't let the old man in indeed. RIP brother.

It's really bothering me. Maybe because it's February. This month will forever bother me. F--K Cancer.

In the fall of '93 I had a really pleasant afternoon bus route. Most of the kids got off in or near town, and then it was a six-mile jaunt out in the country with only a dozen kids (sometimes... on game days, the older ones would stay after school).
I had a group of five 5th and 6th grade girls on that bus who all got off near the end of the route. And they were all close friends, really fun kids, and they always sat right up front. And I became an honorary member of the group. We would talk, tell stories, and talk some more. It was a really nice way to spend an afternoon, tooling along out on a country road, especially if it was a nice sunny day, which it seemed most of the days were.
And when the right song came on the radio, they would ask me to turn it up, and they would all sing along. Eventually, I learned the songs. And this was one was of our favorites ...
I'll never forget those young voices singing softly along with the bus radio in the afternoon sun.

I have to admit he had 2 strikes against him in my music book. I've never been a twangy country fan. Plus in the divided woke/anti-woke world we live in, he represented to people on both sides of the divide something I couldn't buy into. But I never actually heard him that I recall. But now I see a real human side to him. And his voice was quite excellent; plowing the field of Country music without the need for the horrible affectations I have hated for decades.
And his songs say something about the human condition. Kinda late, I know. But I admit I like a lot of what I hear.

I had about the same preconceptions as Marshall and I'd never listened to Keith's songs. I just listened to "Don't Let the Old Man In." Well written, well performed, and it speaks well of him that he would play such a song. So much for my preconceptions.

Thanks Howard, I haven't seen this for years. Still touches me. The sentiment of that song rings true, despite my 68 years.
