Thanks - I really enjoyed this. I can't even begin to figure out how to count that rhythm.

I found him through admirer Will McNicol, who has a few gigs coming up with him. He's got a nice new Fylde Alexander(?). I posted his lovely version of Lakes of Pontchartrain on it before but don't think I posted this one.
On the matter of being able to count the rhythm, Sönke writes in his YT notes that he only noticed when writing the tune down that the B part is in 15/16.

I would bet that if he wrote the song himself, he played and figured out what felt "right" and only when documenting it he realized how "weird" the timing is.

I don’t always like such ‘angular’ compositions myself. But when one hits me right, it’s some of my favourite instrumental music.

I love the breadth of what he does, from sweet like this, to what I posted. I also love the simple joy he always has when he plays, not over the top, I-need-to-look-like-I’m-enraptured. As to the timing, I’ve done that more than a few times. I think I’m writing something straight, and then I count it out, and it’s … how did I end up here?

First video sounds like a mashup of oud figures over a kind of Middle Eastern-influenced jazz ostinato with a dash of 20th-c. classical harmonies. Impressive in that it manages to hang together--and that he has the technique to bring it off. Second video is just a bit busy for my ear. Great chops, though.

Sönke was chuffed to get Andy McKee's praise in the comments for this one.
