Is there any way to tame my tubby sounding Yamaha dread? It’s got fine intonation and plays easily and cleanly but it sounds quite tubby, looks great too. It’s an ‘almost’ guitar. So close yet so far.

From what material do you think the saddle is made? If it isn't bone, a bone upgrade and fresh setup might make it sound better. Just speculating.

Probably plastic. Sounds like a good idea to try bone.

Also tap the back of the guitar to check for loose back braces. A loose back brace will make a guitar bass heavy and tubby sounding.

Or, you could trade it in for a Collings.

You’d have to trade in 6 or 7 for a Collings.

And trading the Yammy for the Collings would be lov d by me but vetoed by the CFO. My ability to act on GAS is severely limited these days.

Tubby Yamaha was one of the lesser known sidekicks of Gene Autry. He appeared in 37 Western serial episodes with Gene in the 1930s. He wore an over sized black felt hat and his signature line with Autry was “Holy Hump Day, Gene! What we gonna do?” He never meshed with Gene’s fans and he was eventually let go. He opened an ice cream shop on Ventura called Tubby’s Cone City and never acted again.

Maybe tubby is a good thing. Bright ain't everything. I should know. I mean, I might know if I were bright enough. I guess I just described irony.

I’m kinda tubby. I’d like it if my nickname was Slim, but, well, you know.

Check and make sure the ball ends of your strings are secure against the bridge plate as well. Probably okay, but had a problem with one of mine where the ball end was shoved right off, and tubby was a polite way to describe it.
