Good morning, sunny and unseasonably warm here. I went for a drive toward downtown Minneapolis, wound up motoring north along the east bank of the Mississippi, aka Northeast Mpls. Historically a working-class side of town, it now is home to lots of artists and cool restaurants, as well. I have a fondness for Elsie's, a timeless bowling alley/eatery, so I stopped in for breakfast. If you order a Bloody Mary there, the beer chaser (we call them "snits") is not a 4-ounce glass of some forgettable brew, but a 7-ounce "shortie" bottle of Miller High Life, which, of course, is "The Champagne of Bottled Beer." Continuing north, I passed the beloved site of the original Grain Belt Brewery: Then I crossed over to the West Bank and passed under the Hennepin Avenue Bridge, a suspension design that the city spent at least $1 million more on than a more utilitarian plan, just to have something visually appealing: I came home through Dinkytown, hard by the "U" campus, where so many precious memories were made at the Podium and Kafe 421, two doors down. Sadly, both are now gone, as is much of the charm of D-Town, with so many bland apartment buildings thrown up, etc. Progress. Sigh. We have to make do with “Champagne Velvet” around these parts.
