Resident Alien. Syfy network. First two seasons now on Netflix.
I won't use the word "best". I will use the word "enjoyed", as in, I have enjoyed this show more than any other TV series I have watched this year. I haven't watched that many TV series this year, but this one is at the top. It is a hoot. It is fun, clever, and at times funny as hell, but it is a natural, un-forced, funny arising naturally out of the characters and the situations they find themselves in... and there is no predictable and incredibly irritating sitcom laughtrack. (I no longer have any patience for sitcoms, can't sit through them any more).
Charlene and I raced through the first two seasons. And I am now saddened that I have to wait for an undetermined period before Netflix gets season three (though, while I wait, hope, and most certainly will watch, I have a sneaky suspicion that the show won't be able to maintain the charm and fun of the first two seasons).
The show is about an alien stranded on earth who assumes human form and attempts to blend in, and oh my goodness, are those attempts something to watch and enjoy. The alien is played by Alan Tudyk, and he is flat out funnier than hell (and the show rolls with his wonderful ad libs. He was apparently given a good deal of freedom with role). Alan Tudyk is a pro's pro. He is so good. The rest of the cast is wonderful, as well.
Charlene clicked on the show when we were looking for something to watch with popcorn on a Saturday night. After the first five-ten minutes or so, I said, "turn this stupid thing off, it's too damn dumb". Thank goodness she didn't, because after that first ten minutes or so, I got hooked (maybe 15, it really does appear as a really dumb show at first, until you realize just how wonderful that dumbness is).
Resident Alien has elements of "Chuck" and "Northern Exposure" to it. Funny, charming, warm, clever and no dumbass laugh track. On Netflix.
I have done my duty.
