Time is marching on.

Time marches on but some of us are laggards.
The weather service expects a pleasant day here. This morning I'll be helping a woman remove an exhibit of her photography at our church. That's the sum total of my plans. There's plenty to do and I won't have any trouble filling the time.
Have a good day.

Good morning.
33F-64F mostly sunny.
Spent yesterday evening ordering shop supplies. Running out of bone nut and saddle blanks, bridge pings, strap button screws and all those little parts that keep a shop running and abruptly end a job if you are out of them. Strings I can get locally and Tyler will often show up with a few sets for me. After many years of service I ordered a new 12mm Japanese made chisel. My most used chisel has been sharpened so many times the edge is getting close to the bottom scallop and can't be sharpened any more. This is mostly due to me being a damn idiot and dropping it thus ruining the edge. I did not buy wood or plastic strap buttons as I can make those. I have bags of new and old end pins. Using a very simple jig I drill and countersink them, then cut off the heads. They look just like a strap button you can buy and the old ones like a vintage button.
8 Days Until Spring.

Morning. Another day in the desert. Shoukd hear from the Ford store today re the truck. Tomorrow the Mercedes goes for diagnosis. βItβs always something.β
Forcast high is 76Β°, some light winds. And in exciting news, the garbage service will swap out my old grey recycling bin for a new blue recycling bin. Thatβs the kind of service that makes this country great.

Clear and chilly morning, a couple of pleasant days ahead. Preparing the house for an onslaught of granddaughters. The Other Grandparents (son's in-laws) are traveling and then dealing with some medical issues such that we will be pulling extra child care shifts. Fortunately the weather looks good and these girls love to play outdoors.

Extremely nice March 11th. Projections call for a high of 60F, just shy of the record for this date of 63F set in 2016. This [projected] warm, sunny week should put a welcome end to the mud season and I'll no longer have to wash Casper's feet in a soapy bucket after every walk, a task we both could do without.

We are at 56 degrees and climbing. My mail carrier is wearing a knit watch cap, short-sleeved shirt and shorts.

Simon was outside for hours. He found a nice spot in the sun and out of the wind to nap.

I saw a financial planner today and was told that, for retirement, I need to make a budget and stick to it. I have not prepared a budget before and do not look forward to it. I understand that without income rolling it, it simply makes sense. I don't have to like it, I just need to do it.

Well, first day after the count and my parcel load was 1.5 times that of any day during the count.
I talked to my union rep about the count and the fact that my route has gone 6 months without being adjusted to pay the carrier for the added burden of Amazon. Her response wasn't "Oh, that's untenable!". No, it was "Well, if they ever drop Amazon from the route there will be a period of time when you might get overpaid until they do a new count."
mind. blown.

Back from a 4 1/2 mile hike in Sabino Canyon and I'm hot and tired. We only intended to hike 3.2 miles but couldn't cross the creek due to the water being too high. This was our first time there and there are many trails. We had intended to take the shuttle up and back first, but had not accounted for many schools being on spring break. We wouldn't have been able to get on the shuttle until 12:30 PM. There will be a future expedition when we'll grab shuttle spots on line the day before and just plan to do the one hour shuttle ride and minimal hiking. It had been a long time since we did any real hiking. So long that we didn't remember what was in our backpacks and had to inventory.

Sorry the hike didn't go that well, Renee. It's a great place. Bill Hammond, Barbara Piper, my wife and my younger daughter did a little hiking there many moons ago.

The folks we spoke with indicated that for many retired folks they overspend their first two years. It results in a substantial reduction in their principal, thereby really shaking up their twenty or thirty year retirement plan.

Well. I just prepared an Excel spreadsheet in anticipation of my upcoming retirement, comparing income as a salaried stiff to income as a retired stiff (definite and projected from royalties, RMDs, etc) and what our monthly expenditures are. So I have identified the shortfall in future income, and what I will need to withdraw in dividends (interest?) from my investment account so we can stay here in the style to which my wife and daughter have become accustomed, and ensure a little surplus for unexpected surprises. π

I know you are a lifelong New Yorker and would never want to leave. But, as a last desperate measure to stave off starvation you could sell your New York home and move to Iowa or Indiana, buy a home and have enough left over to live decades.

I'd probably have to leave my family behind, too, and that could get REALLY sticky, financially. My wife said she'd never move while her parents are still alive (they are both 96 and in good health and sound mind) and we don't know where we'd go, being lifelong, left-leaning, progressive-thinking New Yorkers. Additionally, as we age we feel as though it's good to have access to great doctors and not need a car to procure groceries, among other big-city conveniences. Our roots are here, what's left of my family is here. Where to relocate, in theory, is a problem for us, and we have had this discussion here over and over, with no resolution or solution. If we could find the right place, I'd sell out and move to an easier place to live than here. I may be the only one in this household who feels this way, though.
Besides, who the heck is going to show any of you around when you visit New York?

Montana, obviously.
