I have always thought this was a perfect song for Maundy Thursday.
I've suggested it a number times for church. This year somebody decided we should use it. So I'm working it up.
The video has always hit me in the gut. It seems so confessional for Johnny Cash. Plus June Carter is in the video. What a surprise because she died a couple months before the song and video was released.
"Everyone I know goes away in the end." - Wow !
And Cash himself died shortly after the album was released. And his house, where the video was shot, burned down as well.
Crazy stuff. Can't make this up.

Truly an example of an artist taking a song and transforming it into his own. Here's the original, for a contrast: (Marshall, you won't like it)
Here's part of an intereview with Trent Reznor, the original artist (as Nine Inch Nails):
Trent Reznor has gone on to write quite a number of movie soundtracks, such as for The Social Network, Soul, The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, Birdbox, Gone Girl, and others.

Weird. I never actually head/saw the original. Cash didn’t change much musically. But he made it resonate.

Off of the same Cash album, I always liked his take on Nick Lowe's "The Beast in Me". It's another tune in the same frame of mind (an addiction song) but a bit less heavy. I include it in my repertoire.

I'm changing a couple words in the JC version to be more consistent with the Christian message.
At the end he sings "I would Keep myself. I would find a way." I will change it to: "I would follow You. I would find a way." Seems to be a better conclusion to the song.
And interestingly enough, whilest we're on the topic, I've stumbled across (a cross?) a term; Christian Existentialism. And I really like what I see so far. Søren Kierkegaard was the guy that worked all this existentialism stuff up. So far it makes good sense.
