"Free at last, free at last. Thank God Almighty, I'm free at last."
Tell us about the last day. Did anyone notice you were there? Any last minute crap?

Well, Rob, everyone noticed I was there because they weren't expecting me ("No one expects the Spanish Inquisition!").
I posted a farewell message in the main group chat on Teams, including a link to Roy Rogers and Dale Evans singing "Happy Trails," which received quite a few responses. People approached and told me how much they have enjoyed working with me over the years, and that I'll be missed in the office. Received a few hugs, a lot of handshakes (some firm, some fishy), and some exchanges of contact info with promises to keep in touch and for me to come around after a while for coffee, a drink, or dinner. My managers were very low key, as I expected (they are both on some spectrum or other) and my former manager, the sociopath who hasn't spoken to me for a year or so didn't come around at all, which in retrospect was a great relief for me because I would have started something that likely would have ended ugly.
When I arrived at home, my wife surprised me with a bouquet of these anemones, my favorite flower.
She also made dinner reservations for two at Faun, a local restaurant that serves adventurous but delicious dishes. We shared an order of focaccia with whipped ricotta, my wife had a glass of white wine to accompany the agnoletti stuffed with bacalao in a cream sauce with sherry and trout roe, and I had a Phony Negroni and the ravioloni (was feeling poetic) in a lovely pork ragú as a salute to my former Hasidic employers. It was very good.
My plan for tomorrow is to wake early enough to get breakfast on for the tempestuous youth and then return to my bed. It was a long-ish, surreal, and sort of emotional day.

I assume that stuff you ate was some sort of food. I recognized pork.
I was surprised you went in yesterday, too. I figured you would start your retirement on Monday. Doesn’t matter, since now all days are equal.
The key to a happy retirement is to be a happy person. Good luck!😊

Agnolotti:
Ravioloni:
Working one day of the beginning of the month extends my employer health insurance coverage until the end of the month. We still need some extry time to find a plan for the girls, who enjoyed coverage on my employer-provided family plan. I have Medicare now.

That last day at work sounds good to me, Howard. Aside from the management it seems that you were well-liked in your work place, and walking away with that memory matters.

I was well-liked by a handful of colleagues. The rest of it was bullshit. But hey—it's in the rear view mirror now.
Good-bye to all this.

Is this where you work? If yes, I have a newfound respect for your fortitude.

It could be a lot worse! We have a very nice fitness facility, and most days in the office I take several laps around the pond at lunch.

You have a pond in your office?
PS: We didn't have cubes there; we had stalls. Like in a dairy barn.
