It's true about his voice. Yes, it mats his performance. But it's still Pierce and his songs.

I wonder if it's the same thing that happened to Tony Rice (except that Rice simply didn't sing for anyone after it happened)?

Even his speaking voice is shot. Not sure the issue.

When I last heard Pierce, it didn't sound like spastic dysphonia (which Tony Rice had). It sounds to me like long-term overuse, resulting in chronically inflamed vocal cords. The only effective treatment is prolonged voice rest, and he may not be able to afford that. Alison Krauss has had similar issues, which I suspect is why she tours and records much less frequently than she used to.

I’ve see PP a number of times over the last 20 years. Sat with him at lunch at a songwriting conf once. He never had a “pretty” voice. But expressive and good character, if a little gravely.
But it’s getting worse. Saw him a couple years ago and he was having trouble projecting. He’s a talented good guy. That’s a tough row he’s chosen to hoe.
I’ve seen his daughter a couple times too. She’s a very good writer and performer in her own right.
