We could see Jupiter pretty clearly, plus a few other planets or stars.

Cedar Rapids was only in the 86% area but it still looked pretty cool. We have a clear sky.

Two interesting observations, even a small sliver of exposed sun still really lit up the yard, and it got noticably cooler even during such a brief sun blockage. Poor cell phone photo during totality.

The big question for me is whether it will affect my fishing trip tomorrow. John Alden Knight was an outdoorsman who coined the term Solunar Tables and wrote about the days and times when the positions of the Sun and Moon collaborated to provide the best hunting and fishing. There is a site with tips based on his theories here ==> solunartables.com/Alternatively, search the Web for “solunar tables” and you’ll surely find a lot of stuff. I mean, how can a total eclipse not affect fishing? Right?

There was a mob scene on the plaza in front of the Central Library just down the street from us. I haven't seen this much pedestrian traffic on our street for quite a while.
I hung out on the corner with some of my neighbors.
Then I went back upstairs and watched the peak moments with my daughter, from the balcony.

Been rainy and overcast here since yesterday, and even though it wasn't actually raining at 2 pm, there was enough heavy cloud cover so that the sky and ambient light just looked like it will at 7:30 tonight, just before sunset. Then it got back to normal gloom. Nothing like the clear-sky partial eclipses I've seen, which are a bit spooky. But given how dry it's been around here, I'll gladly take two or three days of rain over a viewable eclipse.

My granddaughter Claire and her dog June had a good view of a partial in Chicago, my grandson Sean had a great one in Cleveland.

I was out on the route during the eclipse. Just as it started I was making a delivery to an older woman who was outside watching it. She asked me if I was going to be watching it and when I said I didn't bring anything to view it through, she handed me some eclipse viewing lenses. So for the next 15 minutes to half hour I kept track of the progress. When I reached its peak of darkness I pulled over and watched the smallest of a crescent of sun showing. Once I saw that through the viewers, I chose to then instead enjoy the lighting on the landscape. The closest I can describe it is that the whole countryside looked like a moonlit landscape on a clear, cold full moon night.

I didn't hav glasses, so didn't look up. We had a 94% eclipse. I did take a walk to the service station to pick up my car from an oil change right at the peak. It was still pretty bright out. but tree branches cast weird double shadows on the sidewalk.

Mr. H made a box camera out of a box and we viewed the start of the eclipse that way. Then had to go to a lunch and we watched some more from the parking lot. Only 75% max here in Tucson. Much more impressive was our 2012 trip to Chaco Canyon to see the total annular eclipse. There were many astronomers there and we got to look through telescopes and also had the glasses.

I’ve seen Apocalypto. I know what goes on during a full eclipse.

I’ve seen Apocalypto. I know what goes on during a full eclipse. I haven't seen Apocalypto, but all I know is totality was way too short. When it ended I was only halfway through my interpretive dance and didn't have time to put my clothes back on.
