"Ben Eldridge, legendary banjo player and co-founder of the equally legendary Seldom Scene, passed away of natural causes on Sunday evening, Apil 14, 2024, aged 85."
This got right by me the other day.

A sad day. Ben Eldridge & company produced lots of great music for many years.

He was my biggest influence when I was playing banjo. I loved his style.

Two great legacies left behind -- his music and Chris.
And quite a legacy he left, indeed. Chris is a formidable guitarist and singer. I like this video, even nine years later, of him playing the Tony Rice tribute guitar that Dana Bourgeois built to help raise funds for TR's medical bills.
Among other wonderful performances from this young man.

I had no idea just how good until I listened to the Norman Blake tribute album -- from sulpher springs to rising fawn -- and in a stellar cast of vocalists, I like Chris's cut the best.

As my old mentor Darrell would have said, "Yup, he's been 'touched.'"

Is Tom Gray the last surviving original member of the Scene? Billy Wolf, who I think was the sound person at the Birchmere mastered a CD we did back in the 90’s. He asked me about how we wanted it to sound and I told him “Just like the Seldom Scene” I remember calling him about it and he told me John Duffy had just dropped dead from a heart attack.

We opened for them about a decade ago. Nice guys, every one.
RIP.
