I'd have never thought of the pairing. Bette Midler sings John Prine.
I've been listening to Pandora.com a lot lately and have created a couple of really good "stations". One of them started out with Ray Benson singing "Sorry". I liked the song well enough that I started a station from it.
Pretty soon I had a great station of standards sung by the likes of Jo Stafford, Johnny Hartman, Mel Torme, Tony Bennett, Frank Sinatra, etc.
One evening the song "For All We Know" as sung by Nat King Cole came on. Man, I used to LOVE that song as done by Roberta Flack. So I walked over to the computer and added Roberta Flack to the list of artists on the station.
Soon I was getting some really nice soul music interspersed with the standards. Really enjoyable -- especially late at night with some of the hours I've been putting in out here in the shop.
Anyway, last night a song came on and, though it didn't sound familiar at first -- and I didn't even recognize the voice at first -- it finally dawned on me that it was "Hello In There" by John Prine. The voice I didn't recognize was Bette Midler.
I got at least as many chills hearing this version as I did the first time I heard Prine do it. It was a wonderful arrangement. Some songs just transcend the performer.

Wow, that is the coolest website. I just checked it out, what an awesome way to find new music! Thanks for the tip...I made two stations right away that I am sure I will enjoy listening to. Will have to visit more often I loved hearing a Bette sing one of my alltime favorite songs. In fact, I have been revisiting some of my folkie roots lately, spent many nights listening to John Prine, Steve Goodman, and John Harford in the days of records and tapes, and didn't have any cds. So I just got the Tribute to Steve Goodman CD, which I used to listen to endlessly. I was clicking thru the tv channels one night and someone was singing "The Dutchman" by Michael Smith, my memory banks overloaded and I NEEDED to hear that album again. Probably hadn't heard that song in 15 years. Songs are funny that way, and as you say transcendant.

The Dutchman is a WONDERFUL song! I learned it after hearing Goodman's version. It has that 3X0003 - 3X2003 - 3X4003 progression that I like so much (like Buddy Holly's "I Guess It Doesn't Matter" or backwards it's Danny O'Keefe's "Good Time Charlie's Got The Blues").
I've got another great station on Pandora --
Tim O'Brien, Uncle Earl, The Duhks, Eddie From Ohio, Chatham County, Old Crow Medicing Show, Brother Boys, The Waybacks, Fiddle Fever, bunches of old-timey stuff.

I used to work at a coffeehouse in Chicago (No Exit) where Michael Smith used to play about once a month. The owners thought he was a genius (which he may be). I also know Anne Hills who produced some of his solo LPs and she has collaborated with him for years. As for Bette Midler, she has surprised me on numerous occasions. She has a lot of depth and emotional range. I think she's quite a good singer though some years ago I never thought I'd say that.
