I sit down in a chair I pick up my guitar I try to take it someplace new It doesn’t want to go It plays some tired notes I guess its wilder days are through
And now the snowman’s knocking The snowman’s knocking The snowman’s knocking on my door Used to be he didn’t Come around that much But now I hear him more and more
The price of gas is up Housing sales are down By the way the war drags on The weather channel says There’ll be chilly days ahead The golden days have come and gone
And now the snowman’s knocking The snowman’s knocking The snowman’s knocking on my door Used to be he didn’t Come around that much But now I hear him more and more
The house was busy once With laughing and with talk The sounds of living filled the air I can’t recall ‘em now I guess they had to go Of course they didn’t tell me where
And now the snowman’s knocking The snowman’s knocking The snowman’s knocking on my door Used to be he didn’t Come around that much But now I hear him more and more

i really like it. simple, strong and gets the point across. the rhyming scheme is a little strange, but it works. i'd like to hear it played. the only thing is i'm not sure who the snowman is. is it just a personification of the cold (which doesn't seem likely, given your hatred of anthropomorphising stuff), or is it an actual snowman?
hope you get over those blues of yours.

Hey, I never said I was consistent. I do anthropomorphize sometimes.
I think you're right that the image is too cryptic. There's no real prose equivalent for what it was supposed to evoke--the encroachment of cold, life leaking away. Originally it was "the blues come knocking" but that made the song sound like another white guy pretending he was from the delta. Maybe I'll see what else might be knocking.
The blues have passed. I don't get them very often.

good to hear. you could substitute "snowman" with "winter". it might make it less cryptic, as you put it. that's what i'd do, but it's not necessarily correct to do so.
