There are several threads now dealing with forum sections, so I thought I'd start one where we can discuss them all together.
I propose as a starting point for discussion:
News and Info News and Annoncements Guidelines for Board Usage The Voting Booth Suggestions (moved from general)
General The Cafe (current Tepp TTT Forum) Songwriting Recording & Performing Multimedia - MP3s, Videos, CD releases, etc. Instruction - music, recording, tips & tricks, etc. Tools of the Trade - tech. and gear discussion Gigs and Gatherings

Hey, I'm all in favor of that lineup!
I like Tim's suggestion of adding a "Workshops, Seminars, and Classes" forum to announce things like that also. It could go under the General section as well.

I'd like to see recording and performing split and you have recording in instruction section.

Just bear in mind that if we have too many sub-fora, no one will even go to some of them, and then people with something to say on that subject will post it in Talk anyway. I think the ones we have are enough for now.

I agree, Don, and I'm not suggestion that we police the forum to constantly move threads because they don't belong in the Cafe, but it would be nice if certain threads could be moved to a more easily accessible spot one they've run their course in the Cafe. Some threads have a high inherent value and should live in a place where they're easier to find. For example, Jazzalta has been doing some chord melody instruction and that's drifted way back now. Dru Lee, Marty, John B, and others had on the old board put together some very informative pieces on repair and building. I think threads like these should be better preserved for anyone wandering in here, hence my thoughts on an "Instruction" forum.
Similarly, it seems that discussion on amps, mics, pickups and the like should have a longer shelf life for those of us that want to reference what I generally consider to be very valuable information and insight based on personal experience.
Also, I don't mind seperate fora for recording and performing, but I combined the two based on the dearth of posts on the old board.

I forgot to mention ChiliBill's weekly musician threads -- they, IMO, can fall into the "instruction" category as well in order for us to preserve these better.

Light Bulb!!! -- We could call the instruction section "The Library" as it would contain reference material, instruction, and other archival quality material.

I like the idea of an archive section, whatever we call it, for things that are of lasting value.
I don't really have strong feelings about separate sections but I hope we don't get into the old AG bit where people argue about whether something's in the right section. ("This belongs in Gear!") I guess all I'm saying is that using the distinct sections ought to be voluntary.

I like the idea of moving something to a specific category after it has been seen in the cafe. For instance Marty's post about the humidifier should be archived. And sometimes there are just good posts that need to be kept.
But let's not argue about whether it's posted in the wrong thread. Good grief.
