Great to see this Photography board. I remember there was a lot of wisdom from Sekhmet, et al., concerning what to look for in a new camera. So here is a link to that old thread just to tie things together. The old "New Camera Thread" thread. - Dub

It's interesting when someone resurrects an 18-month old thread to continue talking about something! And this one, too, tho it's not quite as old.
As nice as the SLRs are, I've lately been looking at point-and-shoots. It's hard to find one that will go wide, Lumix (possibly only a local/domestic name) does go to 25mm (35mm-equivalent) but I'm not sure how their machinery rates otherwise. Got some time, tho, so it's not urgent.

Put it in panorama mode and take 3 pics ... it gives you the outline of the last pic to help you line up the next. The quality of the pics is as good, if not better, than what I've gotten with the Sony for which I paid 5X as much ! cheers kb

Yeah kb - I just bought a Kodak point&shoot - 10.3 mp for about that and am quite happy with it's capabilities. Here's a recent example 'dumbed' down to 1.2 mp and 3x zoom; early morning light (no post production except scaling for display): here's a view without the zoom and slightly changed direction: for point and shoot - it's not bad and really easy to carry around - I tried a similar (10 mp 3x zoom) Olympus, but it wasn't as 'intuitive' in operation as the Kodak. If I ever get around to printing any of the pics I take, I think I'll have to actually use the 10.3 mp, but for most computer uses the 1.2 setting is just fine. And it takes quickie videos - I actually recorded a choir doing the 'Hallelujah Chorus' and it didn't come out half bad. (not great, but with what you get for a mic on this it's f'in amazing)

I put up a thread the other day with a few sample pics from the weekend: acoustictalk.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=tempttt&action=display&thread=13906It's great in "Intelligent Auto" mode. I haven't really tried some of the semi-manual modes yet, although I do want to try it in panaramic mode and try getting some night shots.

Thanks for the "wide" replies there, folks, good food for thought.

Here's a link to the Photo Software thread just to help provide a centralized way of finding all this wisdom.
