For those within dogsled range of Minneapolis: Miss Tess at the oddly-named Lee's Liquor Lounge on 4/29. She's the daughter of friends who are long-time staffers at Augusta's swing week, and I've been watching her grow for a dozen years. Her MySpace page has tunes and videos--"Mood Indigo" is from an album with Augusta regulars backing her, a really first-class bunch. (That's 80-something Rusty Mason on sax--he's been playing since the mid-1930s.) The video that looks like it was shot from the audience (it was--by her mom, last summer at Augusta) features most of the same band doing the same tune, though all you can see is people-shaped blobs. profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=25184534

That's great stuff. She reminds me a little of Jolie Holland, but with less vocal affectation. I'll try to make that show. Thanks for the tip!
p.s. I think Lee's is a really neat room, with a good vibe. Cleanest bar I've ever been in - never a sticky floor in that joint.

Bermp. (I know it's a school night, but. . . .) Very appealing stuff. I love their guitar player!

Tess plays guitar with her regular band, though I wonder whether she's doing the lead work on the "Modern Vintage" record. The guitarist on the "When Tomorrow Comes" album is her-and-my teacher Steve Abshire. I guess I'll see how far she's come as a guitarist tomorrow night.
