Remember when my amp got stolen out of my garage weeks ago?
I got a call from the Roseville police this morning. Seems someone tried to pawn my UltraSound Pro 200 recently -- they didn't even go out of town to do it! (Duh.) They have the name of a dude from Anoka County who did the pawn, and as soon as they verify the number on the amp with my purchase documents, he will be brought in for questioning and at the least charged with possession of stolen property.
I asked the cop what happens now that I have filed a claim, replaced the amp and gotten a check already. She says that is between my insurance company and me, but what often happens is that they take possession of the stolen property and liquidate it.

Make a deal with the insurance company to buy it for a good price.
Assuming that it still works and has been cleansed of the thief's cooties.

I do have evil thoughts regarding the perp, but I need to let the heat blow off first....

If the matter were between my insurance company and me, I believe it would quickly morph into a matter between my conscience and me.
The two of us would quickly resolve the matter.

He'll tell him why it's wrong to take, And then he'll beat him with a rake, And then he'll beat him with a rake...

He'll tell him why it's wrong to take, And then he'll beat him with a rake, And then he'll beat him with a rake... I think it's only a matter of time before someone like Pat Donohue sings "Rhubarb Pie" on "Prairie Home," I become fabulously wealthy as a result, and I move to someplace exotic -- like Iowa, home of Flammang guitars and Ultrasound amps.

After all the time and effort you've put into guitar, it just WOULD be Rhubarb Pie that makes you rich and famous.
And if the perps were cruising your neighborhood on bikes, they probably don't have any way to get out of town to a different pawn shop.

Well I'm happy it was recovered. The perception often is for small time crime like this the local gendarmes are overwhelmed and can't be bothered. Good on them, too.

Paul Paul -- I'd like to say this was good police work, but the fact of the matter is, when I reported the theft, they by routine entered the serial number into a pawnshop database, so when it registered a hit, they were contacted automatically. I am glad for the system, though, as are the pawnshops, I bet.

Why would the pawnshop be glad, he's out what he fronted on the amp.

Why would the pawnshop be glad, he's out what he fronted on the amp. They would be glad to be protected from prosecution or shutdown for fencing stolen property.

You may recall a similar set of circumstances I experienced about two and a half years ago. Had a guitar and a small amp stolen. They were returned unscathed about weeks later. When I thanked the detectives and congratulated them on a job well done I was told, "even a blind squirrel finds a nut once in a while". Glad to hear your gear has been retrieved, younger Bill.

I'm glad your amp was recovered, Bill. Perhaps you could slip a few bucks to the police "Widows and Orphans Fund" and they wouldn't notify the insurance company.
It is also a good reminder to folks to stick their name and other identifying factors inside their guitars in places where the normal thief won't see them. I've even heard of people making up address labels, then using the "reverse print" function on their printers so that when they glue the label to the inside top of the guitar, you can read it with a normal inspection mirror.
That's also the reason why I stencil D.HANNERS on the outside of all my guitar and mandolin cases. I read once (in the old "Frets" magazine, as I recall) that given a choice between a case with no identifying marks and a case with someone's name painted on it, thieves will go with the plain-Jane case because it's easier to pawn.

If the amp was on a watch list, he never would have given the guy any money. Or he'll get restitution from the perp.
Sad thing is, you spend $400 on a peice of equipment, some guy rips it off and gets $50 on it. Next day he's looking for another score. What a waste.
Hope you get your chance to spank him, Bill.

Do you get to flog the guy in the public square? No, John. You know the public square is reserved for preachin', prayin', and singin'. Bill: It's gratifying to read that the Roseville police are on the job. Congratulations.
