Thanks Sekh.
The new lens is a Sony SAL 16-80 3.5-4.5 Carl Zeiss.
So now I have the Sony 16-80, teh Minolta 50mm 1.7, and the Minolta 70-210 f4. That will probably have to do for a while.
Zeiss and Sony are in bed together, that is one of the reasons I went with the Sony.

Mike, could you tell a difference with the new lens? I have one only and I have no idea how much difference different lenses make.

Hi Don. A difference? Well.... I got the 16-80 zoom to cover wider angles than either of my other lenses. Landscape shots, sunset shots, and the whole fandamly portraits. As far as the difference between lenses... Some optics are superior to others. Sony makes a lens that covers the same range for about 200 bucks. The one I got costs 700 bucks. and they make one for 1700 bucks. As you might imagine, the more you pay, the better the glass is, the better the build is, the focus motors go up in quality, kind of everthing. Everthing we play with, whether it's cameras, bicycles, surfboards, kitchen knives, computers, whatever, at some level, they are all the sum of their parts. And some parts are better than others, and can give better results. What camera do you have Don? The shots you have posted look great. Good site for camera/lens reviews. www.dpreview.comMike

Thanks, Mike. It's a Canon Digital Rebel EOS xti, or something like that, with a 17-85 lens, which is one of the kit lenses.
