I have seen occasional threads about 'our' kids. And since I don't take up much room around here... may I brag about my kid?
Shea (Seamus) graduated from Fordham University last May '07. He had applied for graduate programs but didn't receive any acceptances that 'set his heart on fire,' so he accepted instead the option of participating in "The China Program." He has been in China since July of last year teaching English to 3rd and 6th graders. He has been studying Mandarin and been doing about as well as anyone could within the timeframe. He's additionally been completing a 'paper' that he wants to submit to the American Pyschology Assoc. (not sure I got that name right...but anyway)
He and several colleagues (fellow teachers) spent mid Jan to mid Feb tramping around Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam during their semester breaks. You can rent a room (two twins beds) in youth hostels for $5 a night, took buses through the countryside and backpacked.
Well just recently he was awarded a full fellowship to CUNY (City University of New York) into the Phd program in Educational Psychology with an 18K stipend for each year plus the commitment to teach his 2nd, 3rd and 4th years.
Funny stories: He decided to take up Chinese Kick Boxing. (What can I tell ya... he's a macho little devil) I can just imagine what these Chinese martial artists thought when they got a hold of these almost Chinese fluent large strapping American boy....but... a day or two later when he shows up in front of the 9 yr old third grade with bruises all over his face and neck they little kids (btw in English) were quoted as saying...
"Teacher! What happened for you..?
Shea: "I wrestled a bear!"
Kid One: "Oh teacher that is soooo coool...!"
Kid two: "Bear is strong... you very brave.."
Kid three: "Teacher you are such a stupid man!!"
He comes home July 5th. I've really missed him. But if we do go strolling down the city streets of NY, I'm sure I'll feel much more confident knowing my son wrestled a bear.
