I'm really just curious...
Why such resounding silence about skyping? What is it about the idea that is keeping people from even being interested in it? What am I missing?

If others are like me they're skeeered. Not of playing for others, but of the technology...
I haven't even read the thread 'cause of my fears.
Assuage them, willya?

Three things:
1. I have no mike or computer expertise
2. I already waste too much time here!
3. I heard that once you are connected, Skype administrators can look into your house through your PC monitor.

1. I have no mike or computer expertise A PC mic that costs less than $20 at radio shack will do. Plug it into the port in the computer (old consoles it's in the bottom of the back. Newer ones it's in the front and marked with "mic" or a symbol that looks like a mic)
2. I already waste too much time here! We're talking quality time now, now mere quantity. It would make a heck of a nice chat room too, btw. One can chat with their keypad while others play and listen to music.
3. I heard that once you are connected, Skype administrators can look into your house through your PC monitor. I stripped naked in front of the monitor and they've never come back.

My mic cost $18 at radio shack. The download is free. That's it.

I am hearing impaired and so prefer to read emails and forums than talking into a mic over the internet. I would not be able to understand much of what is being said. So, no fun for me. I once did that years ago, talked to a guy in Austrailia but I could not understand much.
So what's your answer to that, Millring?

Yes, that's true. I can hear better with headphones. I could probably do fairly well that way, thanks.

When do you guys do you're skyping? Is it a 'jam' type situation? I'm not a big on chatting, but I'd love to learn how to play nice with others, so to speak. Can clutzes like me play in the background without stepping on anyone's toes musically? on edit: I just read the other thread which answers the first question.

Right now I would say that it's been my experience that you can play quietly while another is playing. I suppose that if that's not the case when all 5 are in the room, we can adjust.

My sister and my mother use Skype. I would have no problem getting it hooked up here.
Now, getting the computer away from my kids at a reasonable hour is a totally different thing.

Offer them money or a house of their own.

Is skype different to, say, free internet telephone calling? I have a friend in NC and a headset mic/phones is all I need to be able to speak for hours, free of charge.

me too. Skyping is great therapy for shyness. You don't have to look anyone in the eyes. You can keep your eyes on your shoes like any good midwesterner would do. I once looked at the ground between my shoes and another person's shoes. We had to get married.

OK, John, I download it, installed and tested. Sounds fabulous. I don't have a video cam, but I'll probably be getting one so I can do this with my daughter while she's in Germany and see her sweet face. No offence, but you guys aren't the big video motivator.
Of course I haven't made a call to anyone specific or received on either, so I'm not sure how that's done, but it can't be too hard, huh? Lemme know when y'all are going to do it and I'll try to hook in. Oh yeah, my skype name. Very creative -- timfarney.
Do I need to add you guys to a list or something?
Tim

To add each other to lists one can search for john bauman (me) or chak_12 (chak) and if you send us a connect we can clikc on ok.
I've gotten contacts from Johnne and Lakeside and clicked okay on my end -- so I should be on their contact lists.
