2 quotes:
"and it sounded to me like a breaking up cell phone in a tunnel. If that makes any sense at all"
"I think you hit the nail on the head with the comment about all the mics picking up the acoustics of all the rooms."
The tunnel sound is the sum of all the different room's sounds as they are added as analog audio at the bridge and the digital "grinching" distortion is the echo cancellation software running out of headroom/crashing because it can't handle processing that much acoustic space.

I downloaded it and I can't seem to get any volume from my mic. I'm having the same issue with Audacity as well so it's not just skype.
I've got my mic input volume turned all the way up. I'm using an inexpensive Radio Shack mic that works fin when plugged into my amp, but not when plugged into the pink microphone input of my sound card.

The only mic I have is the built in one on my monitor. It worked fine when I tested Skype and also when I spoke with Tim Farney this afternoon. Didn't work so hot when we were all connected though.

OK. I'm going to get hooked up this week. Todd, the Sony mic we have should do great. I'll check it out in the next couple day and let you know.
This is silly not to do it. It's a portable Gathering.
Just do it !

Even if the limitations of the technology prevent us from gathering more than 2 or 3 at a time, it's cool. And it'll be a great way for me to keep in touch with my daughter in Germany. Thanks to the Soundhole for turning me on to it.

Don, at one point we asked those not playing to mute their mics. There was, as expected, a noticable inrease in sound quality.

I installed it, but my video camera didn't work with it. Said it wasn't compatible or something. I may need a new driver.

Marshal, the Sony mic works great. Just took it for a test drive. My daughter is getting me off the computer now so she can email her friend in Germany, advising her to get a Skypes account.

...and at one point they asked me to mute my mic. It was while I was playing. Almost immediately the sound quality became noticeably better. Is that what happened? I didn't notice............. I tried on a few different mics that I had laying around. The cheapo PC mic that came with an old Dell PC I have worked nicely. The passive stereo minidisc mic did not work at all. The active, i.e. AA battery powered Sony stereo minidisc mic worked well but not neccessarily better than the cheapo PC mic. I'm pretty sure it has to do with some minidisc mics requiring power from the minidisc players for them to work. Paul, you talking about a webcam? I finally picked one up at the local CompUSA and that worked OK, audio and video. Maybe a new driver is in order. BTW, I dropped in on a PalTalk room to see what that was like. There were at least a dozen people in there taking turns in an open mic format. No video but the audio was decent - not CD quality obviously (I hope no one's expecting that!) but you could hear every note played and every word sung/said. I know most folks have just downloaded Skype but PalTalk would be a better option for us for "larger" (greater than 2/3 ) groups. Chak

I'm trying to figure out why my mic isn't performing well. My inputs on the Creative Sound Blaster Live! card are blue, green, black, and orange. The latter three are all outputs, and the blue is the input described as: Line In/Mic In/Digital I/O jack (DIGITAL_IO). My connector off my mic is pink; could it possibly be that this 'pink' connector is not correct for the 'blue' input? I did fool around with settings on my PC last night and got it too boost the mic abit. But, I'm still not happy with it. My old PC recorded very well with a cheapo mic. I'm considering just buying a USB type mic. Any thoughts? Of course, on the other hand, I'm going to be doing alot more listening than playing....

Dru, Check that you are not plugged into the LINE input. I actually tried that to see if would be any better. Nope, I'm plugged into the pink Mic input on my sound card. I think it may be a problem with the sound card. By the way: The colors should relate this way: Color Function Pink Analog microphone input. Light blue Analog line level input. Lime green Analog line level output for the main stereo signal (front speakers or headphones). Black Analog line level output for rear speakers. Orange S/PDIF digital output (sometimes used as an analog line output for a center speaker instead)

My Sony, with a model number I can't find right now, requires a battery, so it powers itself. One advantage, I'm thinking, of these mics (a condenser mic?) is that it can be shut off instead of muting. That may prove to be quite helpful.

The only drawback when turning on/off a mic is you'd hear a perceptible "pop". Otherwise, it ought to work.

Jeff, my old soundblaster card had a pink/red jack for a mic. That's odd your card doesn't have one........... You could try a USB mic. Camalex didn't have much success with his but his PC is um..., er...... "vintage"

I am assuming you all have high speed connections. I'm guessing my lowly dial-up would be a deal breaker? Mike

Mike, I seem to recall trying Skype back when I was on dial-up and it seemed to work OK but given that those of us online yesterday were all on DSL or better and we still had problems, it would appear that dial-up may not be up to the task. One thing you can do is download Skype anyway (you can always uninstall later) and give me a shout to try it out. It'd be good to catch up with you.
Oh, one more thing - when John and I first attempted an online "gathering", we were both on PalTalk and using dial-up and that worked swell.

We're cruisin' on the freeway, Mike. You're still on the scenic sideroads. I don't think that'll work for this.
