Kind of preachy but I like it, maybe for idiosyncratic reasons. These are all people I knew.
Tommy played guitar, he hoped to make it big Nothing less was going to do He had some local fame but what he didn’t have Was what it took to break on through His frustration grew and he got hard to like Whiskey fueled his bitterness He held out for more than life had to offer And wound up with a whole lot less
Mary lived alone, the beauty she once had Had turned to something hard and rough Many men came ‘round, some were pretty good But none was ever good enough She waited for the guy who’d live up to her dreams And fill in all her emptiness She held out for more than life had to offer And wound up with a whole lot less
Richard was a friend who hoped to talk to God He went looking high and low He tried the ancient ways, praying he’d connect He never got an answer though Then one day he put a pistol to his head That’s one way to God I guess He held out for more than life had to offer And wound up with a whole lot less
It’s fine to have a dream but that ain’t where we live This gritty world is our address If we hold out for more than life has to offer We wind up with a whole lot less

I like it. It's kind of direct, but it seems to work. With the right music that would probably be an excellent song.
