I'm actually a few days late. HAL 9000 turned 17 on Monday. In the movie, HAL tells Dave that he became operational at the HAL plant in Urbana, Illinois on January 12, 1992. Then Dave killed HAL.

So HAL was supposed to have been a 9-year-old computer when it was on the spacecraft?
What I find interesting is that a real "HAL" in 2001 might have been 1/100 of the size depicted.

Great movie. Too slow for todays' audiences but still great. BTW, we were promised a base on the Moon. Where the hell is it?

...HAL tells Dave that he became operational at the HAL plant in Urbana, Illinois on January 12, 1992. But does Urbana, IL, have the O-Zone Lounge? No. Urbana, IA, sometime in Sept. - Dub

We were promised video phones from space station Hilton Hotels to Earth too. As I recall the charge for that call was the then very high $2.15.
