I just finished "Society's Child". An autobiography of Janis Ian. It seems to be a pretty good insight into the pop music industry in the era of the big labels. Also the price of fame. A little whiney but tolerable. I'd recommend it.

A couple that I remember were about the music industry and another commemorating Chet Atkins who was a good friend to Janis when others in Nashville snubbed her.

Another is her wonderful story of recovering her old D-18.

Another is her wonderful story of recovering her old D-18. There was some guy over on AG who just went ballistic about her whenever her name came up, something about a song she wrote or a statement she made at some public gathering not long after 9/11. Anyone recall that brouhaha? The guy was otherwise a very cool and gentle man -- we had some nice e-mail and photo exchanges -- but he loathed her for this position on 9/11.

As I remember, it was one of the first political discussions ever on Talk Talk Talk. Phoenix and a few others agreed with Ani DiFranco that, basically the US deserved 9/11. DiFranco had written a song with lyrics that made that assertion and she had then further stated it in an interview.

I am virtually positive that that is not what I was thinking about, though. I am quite sure it was a Janis Ian diatribe, that it was almost exclusively this one guy who was railing against her, and that we all pretty much let him spew and the issue died quietly.

I read the book at the recommendation of a friend. Other than "At Seventeen" I didn't know much about her. After reading the book I got her live CD recorded in 1980 at New York's Bottom Line. Wow! Whatever her political beliefs she's a master of her craft.

Thanks for the book tip, Terry. (Hey how are you doing with the heart thing?)
Although not of music topic....Have any of you read Half of a Yellow Sun? I had coffee with a friend this morning and she's reading it...said it's really good. Her synopsis (altho not having finished it) made it sound a bit like The Poisonwood Bible...which is one of my very favorite books. It's a nice long book...I'm thinking a perfect choice once winter is howling and one just wants to curl up next to the fireplace with a good thick book.

Thanks for the book tip, Terry. (Hey how are you doing with the heart thing?) OK I think. Still quite a few skipped beats but apparently it takes 3 or 4 months to really know. Thanks for asking!

How often do they check on you for that?
I sure hope you have a good outcome in the end.
