His bike is rigid, but isn't a fixie. You have to run the pedals backwards when you're going backwards (try it sometime, it's good for a laugh), but you can't pedal backwards.
Off for my morning mtb training ride. Man it's dark out there...

That's a pretty sophisticated video production. What does somebody get out of making this? He must have sponsors. Somebody is picking up the tab of the video production.

I wouldn't be surprised to find this guy in the next Bond movie, if they can figure out how to make Bond look like he's keeping up.

One has to appreciate the sheer ability there, and the complete fearlessness. I agree with Ann from the point of view of damage, and others on what is he going to inspire others to do.
But yes, that has to hurt a lot learning how to do that. I imagine when you hop up on something high of the ground, and catch a tire, the resulting face plant would be something else. Always loved the skateboards sliding down railings - I can't imagine what missing that feel like. You might not have any 'nads at all, after that.

A single speed freewheels (so if you are coasting down the street your pedals don't have to be moving. A track bike (or "fixie") doesn't ratchet, so if the wheels are moving, the pedals are moving as well. No coasting. You can, if you've figured out the trick, pedal backwards. I'm good for about three feet before I get it backwards and have to put a foot down.
Now, to explain why he has to pedal backwards when he's going backwards, even though his hub is a freewheel, you have to think about the direction of the ratcheting. When the wheel is rotating forwards it ratchets, hence the ability to coast with your feet not moving. When you start pedaling you engage the ratchet. If the wheel is going backwards it also engages the ratchet, so your feet have to go backwards with it. If you try to make it go more quickly backwards by pedaling faster backwards, that doesn't work, it just ratchets.
Some people do ride trials with a fixie bike, but it is the exception

The old man in me says "how stupid! He's going to get hurt, and hurt others! He's going to damage property!"
But the boy in me says "that's really cool, amazing."
I defer to the boy.

THANKS FOR THE DOUBLE-WIDE PHOTO, BUSHOUSE! Sorry - I was on my PDA and couldn't edit, so I just deleted my post. Paul did a good job of answering my questions, so I figured my post wasn't needed.
