A really cool elderly friend of mine brought in a guitar from her brother-in-law's estate. It was a "Maybelle" apparently made by Slingerland in the 30s. Plywood Hawaiian 00 size. He bought it in 1939 and it's ladder braced and in perfect shape. There was a metal slide in the gear pocket as well as a metal nut extension. Small frets and would need a neck reset to play normally. He had a bunch of music in the case that was all Hawaiian slide stuff. Anyway this was also in the case. ![](http://i252.photobucket.com/albums/hh38/terken1/OldGuitarLitII.jpg) ![](http://i252.photobucket.com/albums/hh38/terken1/OldGuitarLitI.jpg)

Here's more about Slingerland Guitars. I was so fascinated by the stuff in the case I forgot to take pictures of the guitar but I'll get it back and do it. www.slingerlandguitar.com/

$69 for 65 weeks of lessons and you agree to take, and pay for, all of them. I wonder if modern teachers still use similar contracts.

It's hard to read, but it looks like Larry missed some lessons.

Not in my experience, which is part of what makes those scans so interesting to me. That's a fascinating look at the attitudes of a bygone era. Nowdays, people can't even commit to college for 65 weeks at a time! Amazing. Thanks for posting this Dr. Terry.

I missed a line in the contract, he was agreeing to buy the guitar too. All for $69 @ $1 per week.

I missed a line in the contract, he was agreeing to buy the guitar too. All for $69 @ $1 per week. And if you quit anytime before 65 lessons they kept the guitar! They were real hard asses. Didn't want anyone running around Milwaukee with a Frederich J Harms diploma that didn't have decent chops. Ever had a Slingerland Maybelle come through the shop Marty?

Last Maybell I saw was a fake resonator model.
