Saw this one last night. Authentic sets, costumes, etc. Good script, acting, direction. Overall very disappointing because they turned Sherlock into an action hero. Plus the scenes were very dark and colorless, and the soundtrack lacked clarity. WAIT FOR DVD RELEASE! Good part - Only paid $5.50 per ticket due to senior status!
From Russell in the Avatar thread...
We opted for Sherlock Holmes, which maybe should have been titled Sherlock Holmes, Action Hero!. Not quite canonical, but much fun, with a clever script and very fine performances by Robert Downey and Jude Law and an excellent cast. (Rachel McAdam has a cute funny nose.) Lots of blowing stuff up and stuff. Also hitting and falling down and running. Did I mention blowing stuff up? And at one point, I turned to my wife and whispered, "And then he turned on the buzz saw!"

Very different from the Sherlock of books, but enjoyable nevertheless.

I've seen just about every cinematic take on Holmes, including the out-and-out parodies, so I'm not much bothered by the action-hero side of this one, which is, in any case, rooted in the canon (where it's singlestick rather than nunchuks, but still fisticuffs). In our theatre, at least, I didn't have any problems with the sound, and we both rather liked the seedy-steampunk picture of Victorian London. The nice thing about the Holmes material is that it can take such a range of readings and still work at some level.

I just had a customer with the last name "Moriarty".
A font company that I subscribe to released a very cool set of steampunk fonts just last year.
