I need want a TV for our living room and have a space above the fireplace that will accomodate one as large as 73", but probably will limit it to 65" and that set is only 16" deep. DLPs seem to be a great value and Mitz has had a good name for many years. Comparable LCDs at 65" are close to $4K, the Mitz is $1100. Kinda in my budget.
Hockey playoffs would be awesome on someting that big!
So, anyone have a DLP and and if zo, what's been your short and/or long term experience?

I am no expert but I would not buy into the DLP technology at any price point. Other processes (LCD) have proven to be of higher quality and are more reliable.
You are much better off swapping screen size for better technology. My BIL just purchased a 55" Toshiba LED/LCD for $1200 from HH Gregg. If you can live with the smaller screen (and 55" is no tiny screen) you'll get a much better quality picture.

Every time I see DLP I think somebody is calling me. But I had to laugh at XKCD's take on hi def tv.

I have a DLP HD set, but it's not Mitsubilishi. My son-in-law has an LCD HD set and says he likes my set better. But that's highly subjective. But if I had to replace it, I'd probably switch to LED. The downside to the DLP is that the backlight bulbs are VERY expensive. I had a bulb go out a couple years ago and it cost $250 to replace it. Their life is based on viewing hours and based on my viewing patterns, it's now 3 years into this new one and it's still going. They claim normal viewing patterns should allow them to last 5 years. But you won't have to pay anything for maintenance of LCD or LED.

I wouldn't put any electronics above a working fireplace. Soot and optics don't play well together.

Don What you say makes sense, although I'm watching a 37" Sharp Aquos LCD that's spent 3 years above an often used fireplace and wood stove. Think I'm going to go with a smaller screen LCD, perhaps an entry level Samsung 1080p 42". It'll be over the aforementioned fireplace - nowhere else to put the dang thang. Thanks for the feedback/advise.

TV screen size inflation is an amazing thing. I remember when a 36" set was considered huge.

I have had a 73" Mitsubishi DLP for a little over 3 years. I love hockey and it's funny to listen to broadcasters watch replays and not see on their monitors what is quite clear on the big screen Replaced a $125 lamp about two years into the deal. I was told going in that it is to be expected an is an easy fix ... correct on both counts. I love the damn thing. Mitsi has an 82" model now but that's just too big ;D;) cheers kb

Here we are trying to decide between the 19" and the 22" TV/monitor.
