Marie, we both dreamed of retiring To our own little home on the range Then the economy cratered And it looks like our plans need to change I've thought the financial side through And here's what I think we can do
We'll find us a cave and we'll kick out the bear I'll kill some critters for skins we can wear We'll plant beans and corn when the warm days arrive And if the rains come we'll survive
On the cave walls I'll carve pictures Of the elk and the deer that we seek out I'll probably add one of Godzilla Just to make archaeologists freak out The best things in life are all free And in our case they'll need to be
We'll find us a cave and we'll kick out the bear I'll kill some critters for skins we can wear We'll plant beans and corn when the warm days arrive And if the rains come we'll survive
Or else we could just go on working Until we get senile or die We saved up the way you're supposed to How did things go so awry? I'm heaving a heavyweight sigh
Recessions of course aren't eternal There'll be better times up ahead The prophets at the Wall Street Journal Say that things will improve once we're dead We'll just scrape by if we can And if not there's our fallback plan
We'll find us a cave and we'll kick out the bear I'll kill some critters for skins we can wear We'll plant beans and corn when the warm days arrive And if the rains come we'll survive Prob'ly

Fun song regarding a depressing subject. I like the set up. It would have fit well on Loudon Wainwrights new CD Songs For the New Depression.

Thanks for the comment, Scruffy. I'm trying to walk a line between funny and not entirely funny, and I think a few lines take it too much to the serious side, so I'll tinker with those.

I think it strikes the right balance as it is.

Thanks. But songwriters are fussy, as you know.

Having retired just before the whole plan went to hell and there's not much I can do about it now, I like it.

Thanks, Bruce. We might as well laugh about such things.

I like it! Do you have music for it yet?
Boy, can I relate! I "retired" in June of 09 with a state teachers' pension. It was harder to live on that than we thought it would be even tho MrR is still working and I have 5 years of paid insurance!
We've watched our investments tank.
It just didn't feel comfortable to me to be sitting home when I still could be out making more of an income so when an agency called to offer me good money to work part time I took the job.

Thanks, Cyndy. Yeah, I almost always work up the music and lyrics simultaneously.
Our situation isn't this bad, but the situation a lot of my friends face is.

Are you planning to record it? I'd like to hear it.

No plans to record it. I may include it in a set in late November if my cohort(s) like it.
