Rummaging through books at my wife's antique store I came across "The Brass Ring" by Bill Maudlin. It's great! An autobiography of his life from childhood to the end of WWII. A real insight into growing up in the depression and life as an enlisted man in the war. Highlights included a peek into the astonishing black market in US supplies that existed in Italy and his dressing down by Patton over his cartoons. Highly recommended!!

I never thought of Mauldin as being maudlin.

I read that book a few times when I was a kid. My Dad had the hard back, and I got to looking at the cartoons of Willie and Joe. Eventually I decided to read the text. It is a good book for sure!

Damn! And I checked it twice. Guess I can't change it now. Sure you can--it would make my post enigmatic, but there's nothing new about that.

You know I've always wanted to see a cartoon that my father only described to me. It was Joe and Willie in a wine cellar destroyed by the Germans and the caption was something like "Them atrocity committin' bastards" But I guess it might have been "skunks" not bastards as my father had described it. It was more meaningful to me because of one of my father's war stories. He was at the Battle of the Bulge as a Counter Intelligence Corps officer assigned to the 7th Armored Division. Shortly after the battle--maybe just before New Year's Eve his unit found a warehouse full of booze. They had a glorious drunk and the next day received a message that they should investigate the looting of this warehouse that "belonged" to Air Force General A.R. (Pete) Quesada (later owner of the Wash Senators). They messaged back--"We'll get right on it." This thread prompted me to search for the cartoon once again and I found it ![](http://www.barking-moonbat.com/images/uploads/maul20.jpg)

There is another one he did of Willie and Joe hiding behind a wall watching a German soldier walking past carrying a bottle of wine. The caption was, "Don't scare him. He may drop it!" ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png)
