Difficult to imagine to total level of complexity involved in that endeavor.
We are some damn smart monkeys.

I was watching that and I kept thinking, "I bet that crane operator is one stressed out guy."

That's amazing.
I still see so much from folks saying, we have to get into outer space and expand, because we'll never survive here. But like Jeff said, you look at the immense complexities in this, and shake your head. The shuttle was supposed to be cheaper as it was reusable, and could carry a bigger payload. There's nothing cheap or simple about any of that. It's astounding that we could do it, but wow.

I think they left some film on the cutting room floor. The shuttles were built in California so that is where they'd have applied the tiles. They were launched in Florida. In between there was a cross country ride on top of a 747. ![](http://gearcrave.frsucrave.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/12/space-shuttle-on-747.jpg)

Very cool video. Having lived in Central FLorida most of my adult life I witnessed many of these launches which were easy to see with the naked eye even from Orlando. The VAB (where the shuttle was mated to the fuel tanks) is a massive building.
I actually saw that 747 fly over my house one day. It was low enough in it's landing approach that you could see the shuttle clearly.
Nothing however will ease the memory of watching what we assumed would be another routine launch on that cold January morning in 1986. As smart as these engineers and managers at NASA are they don't always get it right.

Yeah, I watched Marty install the pick-up in my dobro. Pretty much the same thing, except for the explosion at the end... no, wait...
