It's such a good deal, the link doesn't work.
Kari has always wanted a Lowden too.

The top looks pretty scratched up—although it's easy to do on cedar, especially with the Lowden-style finish. It does sound like a good deal to me, provided the guitar doesn't have other problems.
If you wanna go check it out tomorrow or thursday I might be able to go with you.

yeah...i tried to check it out and the link didn't work. It is less than most of the ones I have looked at, but it is a bit older, and without seeing the condition hard to tell. They are beautiful guitars. I have fell in love with a few, but they were more like 2,500 or more.

thanks j, I did figure it out eventually. I would go and check it out in person and play it, the sound could be just wonderful...and it has obviously been played a lot!

I just realized it's in south bay, so that puts a damper on my enthusiasm...but I might be convinced.

That's about right if it's in good playing condition. It would be a lot of guitar for $1500, that's for sure, so long as it is indeed in good playing condition.
Plus, the O23 has always been a bit of a connoisseur's Lowden; there is something about cedar and walnut wrapped around that big body that is just fantastic.

J, thanks for fixing the link. I did it as well.
It would be great to have you along to help out, plus I haven't seen you for quite a while. I'll get in touch with the seller and see what schedules look like. Tomorrow is out for me, my son's 20th B-day.
I'd prefer a cutaway but the jumbo sound on those Loud Uns is incredible. And hey, I've got a chain saw! ;D

On Friday I'm going down to SC to proctor a quiz. I'm on a zipcar so I could extend my time and meet you there around 2:15-2:30, but I'd have to hurry back to SF to let the dog out after 30 mins or so.

I nearly always play my Lowdens fingerpicked in altered tunings. They are not really cut out for cowboy songs. I have a cedar and rosewood O model which doesn't get as many outings as it deserves as I have a personal preference for the sound of my spruce f32. Definitely worth a look I'd say. Price sounds okay, but cosmetic damage is definitely worth haggling over. Heres a O23 clip that you may have already seen www.acousticguitarcommunity.com/video/chinchilla-hop-lowden-o23

20 years old, it most likely will need a neck reset. $400+

I have a similar vintage Lowden, bought three years ago and that had had a neck reset. Marty is almost certainly right. Maybe you could contact the seller about that and tell him the price of the work, to see what he says. Trouble is, he may find a less cautious buyer.

That guitar model was this---><----close to being my first "expensive" guitar.

Was Lowden with the Lowden company when this was made? Does it make a difference? Does anybody care?

"A connoisseur's Lowden". I like that, 'cos it makes me sound sophistacimated! ;D
My 11-year-old O23 is a really wonderful guitar. GREAT for fingerstyle in 'altered' tunings. I'd certainly not think twice about using it for strummed accompaniment either. It takes a while to figure out how to strum it and control all those overtones but it can be done.
Not that I'm all that bothered, but the finish does mark fairly easily. I've found a few over the years that seem to have appeared from nowhere. That said, the pearwood binding has dealt with a few knocks with no problems.
The neck profile does not suit some - it is a handful but I find it quite comfortable.
Sadly, mine needs a new bridge because I/the shippers let it dry out in transit recently and it lifted. For what it's worth, Lowden (the company and Mr. Lowden) are very easy to work with. I had it repaired once before (a crack in the side caused by my daughter dropping it on its endpin). The process was easy and the crack was banished into invisibility. This time, I received a prompt reply to an email asking to set up the bridge repair in the summer when I will be back home. When dealing with the company, you are quite likely to get one of the Mr. Lowdens on the telephone.
**** By the way, in 11 years, I've had absolutely no issues with the neck. It's always been rock solid and I don't envisage it needing a reset anytime soon. The 5-ply construction and body join are pretty strong!
As always, though, you've got to try before you buy. The price sounds pretty good to me.

Lowden necks are well made, flip matched outers with a quartered center, tried and true method for a 3 piece neck. I had a O-35 in the shop the other day with a bad truss rod and a twisted neck. The guitar was less than 2 years old and on it's 3rd owner, the don't fix it, sell it syndrome. I can fix it but I suggested the owner send it back to Lowden for a new neck.

I hate to break it to you: that's not expensive for a guitar... ;D That's why "expensive" is in quotes. But, of course, it is expensive for me.
