I've been on a kick lately (I've slowed down my writing in the last year or so. Really only 2 or 3 good songs a year it seems) where I come up with a musical pattern on guitar. Then I skat some melodic vocal line over the top. And if it catches on, maybe I'll attach a place-holder opening lyric that just gives me something to mess around with. The idea is normally from there to find an idea or story line that fits the mood of what I've got started and beat and bash a lyric to fit the framework the musical pattern presents.
The kick I've been on lately is to actually KEEP that place-holder opening lyric and try to build a story/direction/lyric from that seeming nonsensical beginning. It's worked out quite well for me a number of times in strange way. (At least I'm satisfied an amused).
Well, I just put one of my guitars in a strange new varient tuning and found a pattern I like. I skatted a melodic line I like and affixed an opening statement to it that fits the mood. Except I have no idea yet where I'm going with it. (Though the wheels are turning and there's already a theme line [or two; I often do collage songs] that are cropping up). Here's the opening lines as they sit:
I’ve been searching for some answers to questions That’re puzzling me It’s not that I’m obsessing about it I’m just looking; for; some clarity.
Should be interesting.

Let us know how it works out. I think it's a pretty strong opening and can go in any number of directions.
