Every time I try to open email or a webpage (anything, actually), the iPad goes back to the main menu. Any suggestions?

Try restarting (seriously) by powering down (hold the lock button for >5 secs)
If that doesn't fix it, try a software restore via iTunes.

Before you do the second thing, make sure to backup/transfer your purchases to iTunes.

reboot. Press and hold the round "on" button and the "off" button on the side until the screen says "slide to power off. Then do the same thing to turn it back on.

I was going to say put down the iPad and pick up your laptop. Email works everytime.

I thought you never had to reboot an Apple product.

Lies and marketing, Bruce. We bought middeldottir an iPhone, because that's what she wanted. Couldn't do a few things, so we went to the Apple Store. My god, what a circus. About a hundred people, 20 of them techs. They wiped and restored the iPhone. Big improvement over Windows devices.

Take a new device in to a store. Wait. Wipe and reinstall. Now your new device works. Improvement?

My at home fix was simple compared to any Windows device. I'd still be working on my Windows laptop. Big improvement!
