Bruce your pollywogs have nothing to eat, except each other. You might scoop the majority of them up with your long handled scoop used for retrieving items from the pool and deposit them in a bucket to be emptied in the nearest pond or marsh. Wish I had a nearest pond or march, other than the salt marsh around here. It's been so dry the ponds are dried up, which is probably why the toads decided to use the pool cover instead of their normal ponds. When the pool is open, I generally find a few toads, some frogs, in the skimmers every morning that I net out and deposit over the fence, so they're familiar with the pool but there's normally a pond half a mile from here where I assume they really live. It's dry now. As to food, there's algae in the pool cover and some mostly rotted leaves. At this point I think they eat algae. The pool cover is drying up too but it's supposed to rain tonight which will help them out. Then when I get a chance I'll start scooping them into a bucket and figure out what to do with them. This didn't happen in the past 4 years so I figure it's the dry conditions that brought them here. I was going to suggest a golf course pond but they usually treat those against skeeters and probably would kill off your little guys too.

Speaking of releasing things into the wild, Mr. Hammond exited about a half an hour ago to migrate north. Well, he is native to Wisconsin, so I suppose that was all right. Next time, however, you might check with the Department of Natural Resources first. Even with native species, they sometimes try to control the spread.

Save at least a couple tadpoles. Toads make great house pets. Undemanding, cute, keep the fly and mosquito population down, and, after enough scotch, they make great conversationalists. I have been talking to them but they don't seem to understand anything but Norwegian. All they ever say is "Pass the lutfisk."

Good morning. It's raining like April out there. Vegetable garden under way, sweet peas planted, dandelions weeded from the front lawn and the herbs are looking good. What could be wrong with the world?
