Though we follow many of the crime/legal dramas (nothing like relaxing to a nice serial-killer story), the shows that my wife particularly enjoys are the ones that are so well and densely written* that she can't grade papers while "watching." That used to mean Absolutely Fabulous and currently means Modern Family, Veep, Sherlock, and Justified.
We found the first season of Survivor addictive when it was repeated as an every-night "event," but were never hooked again. And never hooked at all by American Idol or Mad Men or Lost or Game of Swords. The only TV science fiction I can take seriously is Futurama, which gets the genre in ways that Star Trek can only dream of.
* Acted, too, though good acting is on display even on shows with half-assed writing.
