They seem to have taken over the airwaves. The networks like 'em, as they're cheap to make. Viewers like 'em, as they get to see "everyman" instead of the offerings of affluent or unreal life situations. I fall into the number six answer. I see snippets of them at the beginning or end of all the doctor, lawyer, cop, offshoots, and offbeat comedy shows that I'm addicted to, and record on my DVR. You get two answers on this poll. If you don't mind, share your answers in the text box. Thanks. BTW, some of my regularly watched/recorded are... Yankees games, Yankees games, and more Yankees games YES Mad Men AMC Shameless SHO Californication SHO The Borgias SHO Boardwalk Empire HBO Sons of Anarchy FX Nurse Jackie SHO Touch NBC Breakout Kings (cancelled) A&E Alphas (series may be over) SYFY Terriers (cancelled) FX Damages (series ended) AUD The Closer (cancelled) (one of the great ensemble casts) TNT The Finder FOX (cancelled) The Good Wife CBS Person of Interest CBS Burn Notice USA White Collar USA The Don Cheadle show? Can't remember the name. Edit: House of Lies SHOW Centerstage YES Awake NBC (cancelled) NCIS(s) ÇBS The Mentalist (getting a little bored with it now) CBS Rizzoli and Isles (just to see - and listen to - Angie Harmon makes it worthwhile) A&E? TNT? New Girl FOX The Big C SHO Entourage (series ended) HBO Two and a Half Men (with Charlie Sheen - Ashton is good but can't fill Charlie's shoes - I would cancel it) CBS Revenge (guilty pleasure) ABC Scandal (ditto) ABC Harry's Law NBC (cancelled) WTF? Can't vote in my own poll? ?

Deadliest Catch is the only one I regularly watch, none of the talent shows.

Yeah, I like them. They can be kind of fun.
First up, like Bob, is baseball. Go Nats!
Then the current ones tend to be Storage Wars and Duck Dynasty. Occasionally Pawn Stars and American Pickers.
Also like Gold Rush and Deadliest Catch.
Used to watch American Idol but we just can't find the time anymore to keep up with the competition narrative so we don't watch any of them.

I suppose I like the talent shows -- at least to the extent that I watch AI. I watched one season of The Great Race and it raised my blood pressure too much to be enjoyable. I get lost in strange cities for a living and I don't find it entertaining.

The only shows I tune in to watch at their appointed times are "House, "football games and the occasional news show. I've become pretty cable and network free, my idiot media of choice is Netflix, streaming or disc. It's refreshing to be away from all that.

I mostly don't watch TV.
What I have seen of most reality shows when family members watch them is a lot of contrived drama. Watched the first season of Survivor 10+ years ago and found it to be highly contrived.
I have been watching past episodes of Mad Men with Dawn and Boardwalk Empire with Zack -- I like the costumes, scenery, cars, etc. illustrating the era. Watching shows with Zack gives us the opportunity to yak about history and politics and stuff.

The only reality show I try to watch is American Idol, but I haven't seen much of it lately. I tried to check out the X Factor and the Voice and just couldn't get into the formats at all.
Most of my TV viewing is movies or baseball games. I've thoroughly had my fill of cop shows, criminal investigations, and lawyer shows. I'd rather watch a movie or old shows like M.A.S.H. over and over again before the new stuff on TV.
For most of the reality shows, I have one word... Why?

My consumption of TV has increased over the past year due to lack of folding money and my almost impossible living arrangement. This will change soon. Right now, instead of TV, I am listening to remastered Beatles music. A friend gave me a disc a few years ago and I've finally found the proper DVD/CD player to play it. My Denon of course. The sound quality is awesome, even with these mid frequency challenged ears! Everything from Introducing the Beatles through Let It Be on one disc.

You must have HBO and Showtime because I don't recognize a lot of those shows.
I voted that I like 'em but I only watch one of them. As far as the talent shows go I can only watch American Idol. I've watched it every week since season two ( they are currently on season eleven). I do have to admit the first half of the season when they are narrowing the field isn't very good TV and I don't get glued to the TV for that segment of the show but once the finalists get to the stage and the TV audience begins to vote the show improves dramatically and I'm hooked. I vote every week.
I can't watch the Voice because of the format. I tried the X-Factor but it was too much about the judges and not enough about the singers. I never watched America's Got Talent because those carnival side show acts they put on just aren't interesting to me at all. I guess I'll have to check out Howard Stern to see if he's as big an idiot on network TV as he is on the radio. The opening show last night got panned. He wouldn't shut up.
I completely ignore all of the other reality style shows on TV. I don't care who the next food, fashion or design star will be and I don't want any of those damn fools to survive on that island. I'm convinced they all go the Hilton when the day's taping is over for a nice meal a hot bath and a good nights sleep.

Mark, many of the shows I watch are on SHO or HBO, but also A&E, AMC, FX, LIFETIME, USA, TNT. Twelve of the shows on the four main networks. I added channels to my original post - I'm pretty sure I got them right, eh?

My DVR list is pretty short:
House : One episode left...honestly, they probably should have cancelled this a couple of years ago. I think they've worn it out, but I'm in this deep...
Wheeler Dealers : Great show from the UK where Mike and Edd buy an old car, fix it up and sell it.
American Chopper : Still among my favorites, although I am more interested in watching the fabrication than listening to them whine about not having good relationships with each other.
American Idol : Got back into it this year.
Beyond that, I totally got hooked on Breaking Bad. That show was completely off the hook. They have one more season coming up this year, but I'm worried about where they go with it. They pretty much tied up all the story lines at the end of last year. I think they added an extra season because the ratings were just too good to pass up. I hope they don't destroy the integrity of the show.
[Mild spoiler alert...] I got into Sons of Anarchy a couple of seasons ago. Really liked it. But their conclusion to the last season ("we're from the CIA")? Come on, man! That's a little too rich.
For a while I got into Pawn Stars, but that's worn out for me.

lots of documentaries (anyone see the American masters show on Johnny Carson last night?) Really well done. Pulled NO punches. Made me nostalgic. Relative to comments here about comedy.... Notice the comments about how comedy has changed relative to politics? The comment was made that it would have been hard to tell how Carson voted, and how that's not so with today's batch of comics.

Hockey Soccer (Whitecaps and some English Premier League) Top Chef (Love the cooking - drama is at a minimum) America's Next Top Model (The estrogen swamp triumphs - talk about over the top drama) Other sports, at times.
We used to watch AI, but got tired of it. Some great singing, but not a lot of musicianship, in that it's a lot of high quality karaoke.
Used to watch So You Think You Can Dance. Real dancers, at least, young people who had been in dance for years, and professional choreographers. Some great, great routines over the years. But it's gotten stale.
I agree with you, Jeff, American Chopper, it was all about the fabrication. The dysfunctional family was a sideshow. But the beautiful things they build, and how they build them, were cool. Haven't watched in a few years, though.
One of our favorite shows that is long gone was about a crew in England that created gardens in small areas in the back of English homes. They were magic, and packed with information. The spaces they created were amazing.

Never got into any of the talent shows. They just never appealed to me. Ruben Studdard, anyone?
The shows I'll make time for, in no particular order:
Mad Men Breaking Bad River Monsters Parks & Recreation The Office (although it seems to be losing steam) American Pickers American Chopper Project Runway (Yeah, "American Chopper" and "Project Runway" on the same list. I enjoy watching creative people make things, be it a motorcycle or a piece of clothing. Plus, my wife does a lot of sewing and she enjoys the show.) American Restoration
When they were on, I made time for: Rescue Me (some of the best dramatic TV ever, in the opinion of this humble scribe) The Shield Stargate SG-1 (good sci-fi, and they did humor well) Law & Order: UK (I always thought the English version probably had the best cast of all shows in the L&O franchise.) Outsourced
And, being a newspaperman, I wish the short-lived classic "The Slap Maxwell Story" was available on DVD or Netflix streaming....

Betcha Millring watches Svengoolie too. Especially since they became parents, Svengoolie is a Saturday ritual for my son and daughter-in-law in Chicago. They even went to a live movie he hosted, had a photo of my granddaughter on the show, have the "It Came From Berwyn Heights" t-shirts and everything.

Betcha Millring watches Svengoolie too. In the Scandinavian version of Mayberry, Gomer is named Sven. Go-o-o-o-l-l-l-l-ly!
