Unfortunately, a few of us on this forum have experienced bankruptcy recently. "It's a new beginning, not the end." says all the bankruptcy attorneys who advertise on TV. I will be joining the BK ranks very soon, along with possibly being without a place to live... but that's a whole nuther story. My question is, were any of you able to retain one credit card, or did you have to get a new one (secured by a cash deposit) after the process was completed? Edit: Anything I should do that I wouldn't be aware of ahead of time?

My friend had to use just her debit card. That was in Canada. Everything is now looking much better for her a couple of years later. Once she had declared bankrupt, she felt such a weight lifted and now the outlook is so much sunnier. She had to go on benefits to pay rent for a bit while she sorted more work out, but it seems to have all worked out for the best. She felt dread at the outset but is now very happy that she went the bankruptcy route. I hope things can work out similarly for you.

No personal experience here, but make sure you get a good lawyer, not one who advertises on the wall above the urinal in bars.

Aquaduct has been through the nasty, I know that. Wouldn't be surprised in the current climate if others had. Working for the telephone company for 35 years has insulated me from such, fortunately.

The credit card offers started coming even before the bankruptcy was finally discharged. You really can't keep one because they're unsecured debt and automatically vanish. We had another one (from one of the companies we discharged no less) within 6 weeks.
Credit card companies are the epitome of financial whores.

Call my buddy, Jeff Titus, an attorney there and ask for a referral to a good bankruptcy attorney

After you have been discharged from bankruptcy it will be necessary to build your credit rating up again. A secured credit card is a good first step. There are several options. David has good advice to start with.
