Crossed another one off my bucket-list. Got to meet and spend a little time with our benign doctor yesterday. He mentioned today was his 47th. He's in town for a medical convention/seminar thing. He's staying at a downtown hotel. I drove in and picked up the good doctor from his hotel and gave him a mini-tour of our fair acoustic guitar city. We went up Lake Shore Drive to the Guitar Works in Evanston. Got to pick up and strum our first McAlister guitar. They had a used one on consignment. And several nice H&Ds, Collings, Goodalls and the usual suspects; Martins, Taylors, and a couple Gibsons. Even got to play a mahogany topped GS Mini. Then we scooted down to Lincoln Square area and visited Old Town School. Spent some time in the Different Strummer store. We toured the old and new buildings. Then adjourned for an outdoor alfresco dinner at a corner pub in Lincoln Square. Lovely evening. We talked about 12 years of Soundholian history. (Thoroughly trashed all you schlemiels. Were your ears burning? ) Had a lovely time with Shannon. He's even more genuinely nice and funny and interesting than he sounds in his Soundhole postings. A cool dude for sure. On the way back to his hotel, I drove him to and around Wrigley Field. The hapless Cubbies were playing a night-game with the even more hapless Astros. We then drove through some Chicago neighborhoods, hit the Outter Drive again and scooted back down town. Cruised part of the Mag Mile and dropped off the happy tourist back at the Raddison. I had a great time. I probably should have grabbed Jim Fay or AJ for this. But event timing was pretty last-minute. And we started the journey in mid-afternoon. Also Shannon mentioned he'd really like to meet Gene Backlin, and I went, "Duh ! I shoulda called Gene. He lives in the south suburbs." But alas, it was a low-key event. I thought of taking an iphone photo of Shannon in the fancy guitar room at Guitar Works playing the McAlister. But I didn't. Great guy I've always wanted to meet.

PS - Guitar Works had a Taylor 765CE acoustic sunburst 12-string that played like buttah. . . . , WOW ! I've never picked up a 12-string that had that ease of playability. And the sound was stellar.
Good thing they wanted $2.9 k for it, or I'd be in the danger zone again.

And $2.9 k is cheap when you think about the fact it is already sunburst so you will save $20 in paint and masking tape.
