A friend that lives the NC mountains heard a noise out his kitchen door last month and it was a bear going through the trash on his back porch. He keeps the kitchen door deadbolt locked now.

Hey guys - been gone all weekend. Have not caught the bear. Fish and Game came out with a bigger trap, and a high definition movie camera rigged with motion sensing red lights. Seems that somke of the "bear guys" work as consultants and have a side gig working on a t.v. show for HDTV filmed in high definition format which is about the potential delisting of the grizzly bear from the endangered species list.(they said it's going on air this winter) Anyway, a bunch of teaser chunks of meat have been cleaned out of the trap last night, but our camera wasn't activated. Sooo...either we had a malfunction and it was the bear, or something smaller and faster was in and was going fast enough not to trip the camera. Fish and game will be out tonight to freshen the bait and see if their continuous run camera picked up anything. Likely culprits would be coyote, skunk, or a roaming dog, etc. or maybe the bear. Updated info though - the day after the pics were taken of the bear peering in to the trap we found a big piss puddle next to the electric fence that had been strung around the shed he was busting up. There is a theory that he got hit hard by that fence(7000 volt .8 joule) and won't be back. If we get more pics or catch him I'll update the thread. It's looking like the bear is outclassing everyone on this one.
Mm

If I ran into a fence like that, there'd be a big piss puddle around me, too.

MM, how long does it have to be gone before you consider it gone for good?

I'm hoping he comes back and they get some good film and then catch him.
If he doesn't get relocated, he's gonna get too bold and get himself shot.

Hey T – no bear. He hasn’t been back since the night I got two pics of him peering in the barrel trap and left the puddle when he apparently got zapped on the fence. I was convinced about a week ago he wouldn’t be back and asked them to take the trap away and it’s looking like they will finally get it picked up this Saturday or Sunday. I’m actually pretty irritated by the whole thing. In 4 visits in a week span the bear got 3 pet rabbits, 8 chickens, a few buckets of feed, busted the same gate twice, destroyed a wire fence, pulled several pieces of cedar siding off a shed and cleaned out 2 different fish and game traps 4 times without getting caught all despite being seen 1 night and photographed on 2 other nights. There have been 4 people at my house daily or semi daily for almost 2 weeks now and we have about 10K worth of high definition cameras and motion sensitive infa red stuff hanging on tress behind the place. The huge effort was a waste IMO when they strung this 7000 volt bear fence around a shed that had already been thrashed and cleaned out(and had a baited trap sitting next to it) only to zap the bear and apparently have him leave for good. Or at least the winter. I dunno it’s been interesting. I’m not irritated the bear got away, I’m not even that irritated at the property damage cuz I figure that’s the price to live where I live and maybe keep some livestock. I am, however, irritated at all the taxpayer resources and money dedicated to – I assumed – trapping and relocating this bear and the decisions made along the way if that was truly the goal. So, if the bear never comes back they did their job and I’m wrong. If he comes back for the sequel next fall SSDD with a government agency as far as I am concerned.

Guess he was clever if he cleaned out the trap. Or it wasn't triggered just right. You have to wonder if the zap ran him off, or if it was all the traffic and odd stuff.
If you still got critters there, he might come back when things are quiet. Unless he found good chow somewhere else.

Nobody knows, but I will personally be amazed if he returns at least this year. Bears have personalities that vary as much as peoples. When I say he cleaned out the trap without getting caught I mean he went in the barrell several times on both traps and took everything edible out except for the last thing at the end which is tied to the trigger. With no collar and having never been caught to anybodies knowledge there is no doubt this bear is as sly and crafty as they come. If he got a big stinger on his snout I could see him just never coming back cuz he's definately a thinker. Also - several of the males they have radio collared around here are meandering back up to the high country so it looks like they are pretty close to denning up.
