Hello,
My name is Elena, I live into little town in Russia. I have little daughter, but without husband since he left us. Because of deep crisis in our region I losted my job and can not pay the heating bill for our apartment anymore. We urgently need heating cause winter comes and temperature in our apartment becoming very cold. The only way to heat our apartment, it is to use portable wood burner, because we have some savings from trees and then we can heat our home free of charge. But we are not able to buy a wood burner, because the cost equivalent US $ 290, and it too much for us. I Finded your adress on the site and decided to write you this letter from our local library. If you posses any old portable wood burner, and may be you do not use it anymore, I pray that you can gift to us, and to delivery it to us. I hope to your response, then I give you the address of our home for delivery. I wish you a Happy New 2013! Elena.
<end quote>
I'm tempted to reply that I have one, but that UPS needs a physical street address for delivery.

And by the time a ship delivered a heavy piece of equipment like that, it'd be spring.

And by the time a ship delivered a heavy piece of equipment like that, it'd be spring. Naw, use Purolator Courier. You could get a 70lb stove from Toronto (I picked a random N.American city) to Moscow (I picked a random Russian city) in just 3 business days for a mere $1582.77 (USD). There are couriers that can get anything of any size just about anywhere in the globe in about 24 hours if you're willing to pay.

A 70-pound stove is hardly worth the trouble. Ours weighs 400 and required two very strong guys to rassle it into the basement, where it will sit until the house collapses around it.

The shipping estimator at P.C. wouldn't accept a weight greater than 70 pounds. I originally had tried to enter "300". But, there are carriers that can haul heavy stuff far and fast. Some of them originally made their name by getting machine parts (turbine blades, huge gears) to oil rigs, power plants and manufacturing facilities around the world in 24 hours. Then you're talking about $20-30K in shipping costs. But, if you've got to have it and got to have it yesterday, it's worth it.

Why would anybody try to scam people for a wood stove. Don't you think they would ask for something a little less conspicuous, like cash.
I'd write back and ask for their physical mailing address and their contact information so you can confirm the delivery. Try and figure out where the scam enters into the transaction.

The scam probably enters into it when the dupe realizes it costs a couple grand to ship a wood stove and just offers to send a couple hundred in cash. After all, Elena is clearly not your normal internet hack. She's just trying to heat the house for the children.

I don't understand. A wood stove would burn up pretty fast, then what do you do...go out and get another one?

I can send her some extra money as soon as I get the cash I'm expecting from a Nigerian prince I know.

Now wouldn't you all feel bad if we wake up one morning and read that some poor widowed mother in Russia froze to death because some rich American guitar players refused to send her a wood stove. Shame! Shame!
