Dreary here. Looks like rain, which we really need. I have never seen Big Bang Theory. I was going to ask if it was a new show but I see 2011 mentioned in the posts about canned laughter so I guess it has been on for a while. I was going to say I will see when it is on and watch it but I know I will never do that so I decided not to say it. Maybe I am missing something good. Enjoy the day and keep those ovens clean.

It's rainy here too, but not nearly enough. It's definitely fall. I'm digging out the jacket for the first time today.

Big Bang is done live in front of people. Interesting. Canned people. Your post made me wonder, and when I wonder I google. This is the first result of "Big Bang Theory Laugh Track", 11 Reasons Geeks Hate The Big Bang Theory.www.ugo.com/tv/11-reasons-geeks-hate-the-big-bang-theory-the-laugh-trackI didn't go through them all, not after suffering the disappointment of finding my pet peeve ranked dead last among the reasons to hate the show: 11 The Laugh Track This isn't a geek-specific gripe against The Big Bang Theory, but really: it's 2011. We know what's funny and what's not funny. Laying an ocean of canned laughter down on top of something doesn't make it any funnier, and in fact often makes things less funny. The Big Bang Theory has one of the most intrusive and obnoxious laugh tracks on TV right now. Any actual enjoyment that you could get out of the show is suffocated underneath it. And even more bizarre, it's actually generated by a live studio audience, trained like Pavlovian dogs to guffaw on cue. Obnoxious, overwhelming fake laughter is a Chuck Lorre trademark, so I wouldn't expect it to go away anytime soon.Interesting, for sure. Clearly the laffing is not a natural response by a live person to something that amuses them. I walk by the TV while people are watching shows with "Laff Tracks" and chuckle myself at the blank stares on the faces of TV viewers while there's this uproarious noise coming from the TV. The viewers don't even grin. They look hypnotized.

Good morning. No rain here, just sunshine. It's a pleasure not to have the air-conditioner running. Have a good day.

Good morning. A bit of rain today may turn into a couple of inches of snow tonight. New fireplace insert is supposed to arrive the end of this week. The old one is on the porch. Good thinking by us.

I am an unabashed Big Bang fan. Love Shamy and Bernadette. Two that are clearly more than foils for their fellas. And Penny is a wonderful portrayal of a Good Person. I laugh all the time at that show, and never noticed the laugh track before. Hope this awareness doesn't spoil the show for me.

Happy birthday Niki, and congrats to you Doug
Well Jim, I think I'm going to have to focus my attention away from the laugh track and focus more on Penny's breast.

Happy birthday Niki, and congrats to you Doug Well Jim, I think I'm going to have to focus my attention away from the laugh track and focus more on Penny's breast. I think I already said I don't watch the show, it just drives me nuts from listening to it. But maybe I've been doing it all wrong. I didn't know there were boobs. Maybe I should give the show a fair viewing. With the sound turned all the way down.

Laugh tracks: I heard or saw something fairly recently about the history of the laugh track and why it was developed. Or maybe I'm conflating a couple of history-of-broadcast-entertainment pieces. In any case, it has to do not only with delivering the illusion of response-to-jokes but eventually with how one writes comedy for a no-live-audience situation, as well as how the actors deliver the lines in audience/no audience settings. In some scripts, you can hear how the writers have built in space for laughs, just as you can tell when an actor has to pause more than the rhythm of the scene might demand for an unexpected laugh. (Comedy is like music--timing, doncha know.)
The Wiki article is an amazingly extensive treatment of the development and deployment of the process from 1940s radio onward. I recall (from elsewhere) that part of the history goes back to the "applause" sign that was used in radio to cue the desired live-audience response, and that the laughs for the filmed bits on Monty Python were actual laughs recorded during showings of the completed skits. (As distinct from the stock film clip of an auditorium full of applauding grannies that they liked to use as part of a joke.)

Routing binding channels today. That actually sounds like fun. Would love to have something like that to do here while I wait for this darned 2½ weeks that I still have before I go in for those heart tests. But I do have the forms from St. Luke's to fill out.....what fun! Tamarack.....feeling rather inclined to be supportive today. Those two terms have been mentioned here too.
