So, Groucho was a gaucho who liked gazpacho? Well, where does that leave Harpo?

Isn't it a law that you take the flag down every night? How they gonna do that? They'll probably hire a team of illegal immigrants to carry it off to storage at sunset, haul it back at dawn. . . . , The flag can be left up at night, but it has to be lit up. There's a guy near me that has a flag up 24/7/365. He has a yard light on it. I look for it, because I turn on that side street when coming home from the north and there's no street light. But the lighting bill on a 400 ft tower flag will be huge. Plus you'd probably see the beacon from outer space.

Gaucho, gauge, gouge, gauze, gouache, gazpacho. . . .
Guys, your Uncle Russell is so proud of you. (And St. Groucho smiles down. . . .)

Advertising, appealing to a market demographic plain and simple. I'm sure Perkins is a fine patriotic corporation. (Because in addition to being religious, a corporation can also be patriotic.) Now if their food was any good, I might actually eat there.

As it happens Acuity is my insurance company. I just send in my premiums and I don't pay much attention to what they are doing. As long as they are front and center when I have a claim I don't really care much what they do. So I missed this until a high school classmate sent it to me the other day.
I consider myself as patriotic as the next guy. And I also the flag as a symbol of our country. I'd like to see it treated in a respectful manner. This seems very respectful to me even though it might be a bit over-the-top. But we all still have the right to be over the top.
Just to be clear, I'm not an "America right or wrong" kind of guy. I don't think that love of one's country carries with it the responsibility to accept, tolerate, or condone the excesses of it's government. If fact I believe that it's the responsiblity of our citizens to scream bloody murder when the government screws up.
As a society it seems that we are increasingly intolerant of other people's beliefs. Fortunately, we're still free in this country to speak out for or agin our government. There aren't a lot of places in the world that tolerate that.
I am about as cynical as it gets but if Acuity wants to put up a huge flag and call it an act of patriotism I'm not gonna tell 'em it's not.
Gauche? Well hell's bells, Bill, in my opinion that building your paper is moving to is about as guache as it gets. But I'm not the arbiter of gauche so I don't mind.
I'm equal opportunity. I laugh at some of the people a Walmart too.

Is it any better with a big-ass flag in front of it? Naw. The cynical me says the flag is just a cheap trick to divert attention from a building that looks as if it was designed by several archictects, none of whom consulted any of the others.

Hah! I meant the comment for Bill's building-to-be...but it applied doubly to Ken's image.

I don't get this flag worship. And how does this affect policyholders' premiums? You're just pissed because they won't let you climb the ladder on the inside and parachute off the top. Look close, they jumped out of a plane. I bet it's a rush to climb up inside that thing. Wonder if there is an elevator?

Yeh, I am not crazy about the exterior, although our newsroom is gonna be really groovy (until we pig it out in the space of a few months). The folks who designed it said they were paying tribute to several surrounding buildings, but I wonder if an original idea might have been better, like the building you can see a bit of in the upper left of the above photo. Wells Fargo Tower:

As a society it seems that we are increasingly intolerant of other people's beliefs. And yet, what a conundrum. We require diverse beliefs in order to have targets with which to maintain our daily entertainment of ridicule. How ironic.

I like it, Bill...but original? It harks back to the Empire State and other Deco buildings of the era.
