Hi there friends,
I'm going to buy my first Gibson j series acoustic. I really need a shortscale so I'm between the j15 and the j35. I own a Martin 000-1 and I love the sweet bassy sound. I was looking for something more comfortable to play with...
I'll really appreciate your comments and suggestions on those gibson models.
Ps. Where I live I do not have a dealer to play them, so I have to buy online...
Thank you all! G.

Welcome Geri
It appears the J-15 and J-35 are pretty much the same guitar but with different woods. The 15 is walnut, which makes a fine guitar but will probably be just a bit brighter than the mahogany 35. Nothing wrong with the J-15 but if you want the traditional Gibson sound go for the J-35. Otherwise the J-15 is a good guitar for a few hundred $ less which is probably what you'll spend on shipping to Greece.

Hello Marty,
Thank you! Hmm, from the youtube videos I was thinking that the j35 was brighter... Do you own any of those two?
Have a nice day G.

I had a J-35 years ago, it had that nice tubby James Taylor sound. One of our members, Marshall, is a big Gibson devotee. Hopefully he'll cine in on this.

The J-35 is the hands down favorite among Texas style contest fiddlers. All the great Texas style rhythm guitarists use J-35s or J-45s. Of course they are dandy for other purposes as well.

I have played a J-35 and it is a sweet guitar. I have considered getting one myself. It is a lot of guitar for the money, too.

If I wasn't a Martin devotee, I'd have a J-35 or 45.

Well, that is a fine demo site. Dude can pick it. Strings on each of the guitars sound awful new tho.

I'd have to check the one I have in for repair but the Santa Cruz VJ might be a longer scale.

That is correct. Both are sweet guitars.

MA-mi Do you go to that store in Louisville? That is quite a collection of Gibby's. Wondering if they have a similarly strong collection of other brands or luthier made guitars. I'm coming to Denver for some continuing education, and would bolt out there of an evening if it is worth it.

Make sure to get the one that matches your wardrobe.

Make sure to get the one that matches your wardrobe. Now there's somebody talking some real sense ! Actually Marty is right. They are the same guitar with different wood for back and sides. I've never played a J15. Just haven't run across them in a store yet. But I've played a handful of J35s, and I think they are terrific. They're better than most new J45s in my estimation/experience. Personally I'd prefer a sunburst finish, which I don't think is available in a J15 or J35. But that's just me. They are going to be very similar. Mahogany is the classic material, so maybe it'd hold better value, But it's really six of one; half a dozen of the other. I think you're doing a good job by listening to clips. See if somebody compares the two; that way you'd hear a recording under the same circumstances. (PS - I'm not voting). And don't forget to check out this one.

I'm coming to Denver for some continuing education, and would bolt out there of an evening if it is worth it. Doc - they stock a lot of Gibson and Taylors, some Martin, some Froggy Bottom. They are mostly an electric shop that dabbles in some acoustic and amps. Their Martin offerings lean to lower and mid priced stuff then they get the occasional Authentic rolling through which gets snatched up pretty quickly. Just cruise their website. I would say their pricing is on the higher end of the negotiable range usually, but they have excellent photos and either have a demo video or offer really good in hand descriptions, and have a no questions asked approval and return policy. Never been personally but from what I've heard it's a relatively small storefront with a huge warehouse out back and they welcome visitors. I've had nothing but superb dealings with them. I bought a tele a few years back and was waffling back and forth between 2 and they said "we'll just ship you both, send the one back you don't want and we'll charge your card after the dust settled". My opinion is a good Gibson is as good as anything but you have to get lucky or be at a place like this to run the racks. If I was going I'd ask to play the 100K Jimmy Page Les Paul and crank it through one of their Dumbles or Vintage Marshall Plexis www.wildwoodguitars.com/products/gbjp7.php?CategoryID=10&n=0

Hello to everyone!
I really want to help you all for reply and help me choose. I'll go for the J-35!!! I really liked the wildwood site!!! Very useful...
By the way I also think that the J-45 is not worth the extra $...but that sunburst is really, really better...
I'll be back with some photos of my guitar after the purchase...

Excellent. You will notice that on this site, we never recommend the cheaper option. We revel in G.A.S.
