Oh, man, I love this time of year. Yesterday I made my first BLT of the year with local tomatoes, and it was SO GOOD! Today I am munching on raspberries that were picked early this morning. The sweet young thing manning the truck said the sweet corn was not yet local, but from Indiana and really good. I didn't buy any, but I did get some local cukes and green beans. For some reason she had no strawberries -- could that crop already be done, I hope not?

I've had my dinner the past two nights at a farmer's market down the road from the show. Ears of corn drenched in butter, $2 an ear (twice the pirate's price)

Neighbors' apricots are done. I made chutney with the last batch that they gave us. Our pears aren't ready yet. We've had a few ripe tomatoes in our garden. Made a white pizza a couple of days ago with fresh basil and oregano from the garden. I never seem to think about going to the weekly farmers' market until it's too late in the day.

There was a big article in the paper today about how IN farmers are going to lose their shirts due to the intense rains of May and June. $2 may seem like a bargain in a few weeks. Record crops lost this year.

Strawberries are probably about done now. We have had our fresh blueberries, the corn has started, we have been getting okanagan fruit. Tomatoes have been lovely. Yup, I love this time of year.
When we were up at Whistler, we had a salad that was a block of watermelon, with feta cheese on top, fresh arugula, strawberries, with balsamic reduction drizzled on top. Fabulous.

No tomatoes yet. We have had raspberries from our backyard for about two weeks now, they are coming on like gangbusters. Early corn is here too, and it's so good grilled spinkled with salt an a little spicy red pepper powder.

Man, there's a bunch of good lucking stuff on that page. Strawberries and balsamic reduction are one of those things where just meant to be.

I've been watching my beans, and I'll have plenty in just a few days. Nothing like green beans. Kim likes her grape tomatoes, and she'll be drowning in them in a few weeks.
I believe strawberries are coming to an end, as they're all on sale everywhere around here. Maybe you've got a week more than us up north?

I believe strawberries are coming to an end, as they're all on sale everywhere around here. Maybe you've got a week more than us up north? I guess our strawberries are done -- they had like a three-day period to sell them, and all the satellite pickup-truck locations of this farm I like so much had not been set up yet, so between sales at the mother ship and pick-your-own sales, they disappeared. Oh, well, I am more fond of fresh raspberries than I am of strawberries, really, as it seems like you can get affordable and tasty strawberries almost year-round these days. Not so much with raspberries, unless you are willing to pay up for them.

Kim stocks up on raspberries. She bags them up in ziplock baggies with a spoonful of sugar (makes them keep better, so the farmer's daughter says) and keeps them in the freezer. That way she's got fresh raspberries all year long.

We get yellow raspberries, just got a load today. Yum. Have to agree, Bill, it needs to be a pretty special strawberry, for me.
We replicated that salad tonight, used blueberries, instead of strawberries, with a bit of chopped mint, just a touch, thrown in. Heaven, and so easy to make. (We bought the balsamic reduction - tasted just fine.)
