That this piece was published in the New Yorker cheers me.

I'm rarely thought of as "tall", but in your case, Doug, I'll take it.

Well, I'm not "the media" (though I have worked as a journalist of sorts), but I did study theology, and about three paragraphs into Shane Morris' piece I recognized a particular flavor of sectarian thinking that insists that a particular flavor of Christianity is the real deal (he seems to have a lot of sympathy for the evangelical varieties, as represented by Wheaton College), even though I can point to others that see those sects as not occupying the center. And his take on whether the Muslim deity is the same as (his understandng of) the Christian one reminded me of the course I took on early-Church disagreements about the Christ's nature, humanity, and relationship to the Father. (Homoousian/homoiousian and all that.) This guy sounds like he'd like to repeal Vatican II. Actually, he sounds like the kind of guy who never wanted to join the party in the first place.

I'm not cheered that the piece was published anywhere.

There are indeed non-trivial theological problems with its attempted satire.

" (Homoousian/homoiousian and all that.)"
I always hated those debates. It just seemed like "Tastes great vs. Less filling!"

I could have done without his sarcasm, but the general premise I agree with -- at least to the extent that it defies logic to be able to have it both ways. And the way it stands (as he points out) every denomination that is evangelical, fundamentalist, reformed, and everything grey but orthodox in between is casually dismissed or considered non Christian by the premises that are held as truth by what he's describing as "the media". I notice it too. It's as dogmatically emphatic about what Christians have to believe -- stating it to be so though they make no claim to believing it themselves (this isn't an interdenominational debate. It's people who have little to no knowledge of Christianity defining Christianity for Christians).

Wow y'all get so deep. I just read funny satire. Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar.

I think "ironometer" would work because something measuring the metal would be a "ferrometer".

And for all you Kevin Smith fans, what about Rufus, the 13th Disciple? They weren't so nice to him, either. ![](https://i.ytimg.com/vi/VDrz7hpEs_Q/maxresdefault.jpg)
